One year ago today, I fell and managed to break and dislocate my shoulder. It was a workplace injury, meaning Worker's Comp is in control of my care.
Without the boring details, the result has essentially been forced retirement. An MRI that was denied for 7 months finally revealed bone spurs on the broken bone that are digging a hole in a muscle that covers it. Rotator cuff surgery has been recommended and - of course - denied several times. While bureaucracies, insurance companies and lawyers hash it out, I'm medically restricted from lifting more than 10lbs, from lifting any weight above my head, and extended repetitive motions.
So once again, it's time for me to reinvent myself (any ideas). At 62 and a year of inactivity, the likelihood of gaining back the strength for cabinet making is slim, either with surgery and another 6+ months of rehab, or without surgery and the accompanying physical limitations.
Once this whole ordeal is complete, I do hope to find some way to continue woodworking, but not as a commercial business. Hopefully it will be more sculpture, and some other small projects I've wanted to tackle, like making my own guitar.
For all of you who've kept checking in on this page, thank you for your continued interest. I can only say 'stay tuned' for what will hopefully follow.
