This week’s featured speaker at the Huron County IRN luncheon was Chris Stang, a CPA with 26 years of experience helping individuals and small businesses.

Chris explained that his work goes far beyond preparing tax returns. He helps clients understand Ohio’s complicated city and school-district taxes, choose the proper business structure, plan for retirement, and prepare for major life changes such as marriage, divorce, buying or selling a business, and transferring a business to the next generation.

His best referrals are small-business owners, people who are new to Ohio, or anyone facing a significant financial change. Chris’s message was simple: Good tax planning should happen before a decision is made—not after tax season arrives.

Thank you, Chris, for an informative and eye-opening presentation!

This week we learned about the history and growth of D&D Smith Winery and Bistro from co-owner Dani Smith.

What began in a basement in 2008 has grown into an award-winning destination featuring 47 wines, great food, events, entertainment, weddings, and camping.

We even tested our noses by identifying different wine aromas!

D&D Smith Winery is a great example of a family business growing through hard work, community support, and a clear purpose: Bringing friends and family together.

This week at the Huron County IRN meeting our Senior Director, Lori Wagner, helped us understand the importance of being a member.

The Benefits of Being a Member of IRN

The benefits of being a member of IRN go far beyond simply exchanging referrals. It’s about building relationships, earning trust, becoming more involved in your community, and developing a network of people who know who you are, what you do, and who you can connect them with.

Think of every weekly IRN meeting as a customer appointment—except instead of sitting in front of one customer, you may be sitting in front of 12, 15, or 20. That’s why showing up consistently matters.

IRN also builds something you can’t buy: trust. When you refer another member, you’re giving them a personal recommendation. Unlike an online review from a stranger, it comes from someone the customer already knows and trusts.

Over time, you become more than the person who sells a particular product or service. You become the person people call and say, “I know you don’t do this, but who do you know?”

IRN also gets you more involved in your community, increases your exposure, and continually expands your network.

Show up. Build relationships. Earn trust. The referrals follow.

Lori Wagner of Type & Graphics shared an overview of her business, drawing on more than 40 years of experience in the printing industry and 30 years specializing in signs and vinyl graphics. She highlighted the five core areas of her business: printing, signs, promotional products, vehicle graphics, and logo design.
Lori is committed to providing exceptional customer service by working around her clients' schedules, often traveling to their locations for vinyl installations, and responding to inquiries as quickly as possible. She also discussed a growing challenge in the industry—AI-generated artwork. While convenient, these files are often too low in resolution for large-format printing, requiring her to recreate the designs for professional-quality results.
An ideal referral for Lori is a new or growing business that needs a professionally designed logo and a one-stop source for quality marketing materials, signage, and branded products delivered on time and at a reasonable cost.

This week at IRN Huron County, we had the opportunity to hear from Doreen Shutt of Key Profit Solutions and Mike Patten of American Guardian Warranty Services.

Their presentation covered:
• Used car warranties
• GAP coverage
• Tire and wheel protection
• Key replacement
• And other products designed to protect you from unexpected repair costs.

One point really stood out: a used car warranty can pay for itself with just one major repair. In today’s world of expensive automotive technology, a single repair bill can easily cost more than the warranty itself.

We also learned that “bumper-to-bumper” really means bumper to bumper. Understanding exactly what’s covered can make all the difference when an unexpected breakdown happens.

Their presentation was a great reminder that buying a vehicle isn’t just about the purchase price. It’s worth taking the time to ask questions, understand your options, and make sure you have the protection that fits your needs before signing on the dotted line.

Thank you, Doreen and Mike, for sharing practical information that can help drivers save money and avoid costly surprises.
