Practical advice anytime you hire someone to do a job for you. ALWAYS have in writing what you expect and the specifications for quality. I would expect a fence to be built straight and plumb, or at least within 1/4" or so.This Is an example. I did not bid this fence job because I have been busy and It wasn't a one man job. The pics don't really show how crooked it really is. It probably has a least a 6" bow and is close to 1" out of plumb in most areas. They also notched the fence and put a piece in front rather than cutting a stump. And they only used 4 screws on each 8' section. I would have required 12.
Bottom line- get it in writing, specify quality, and don't pay a nickel until you are satisfied. Oh...I watched them build this in about 12 hours....if your guy shows up to build your fence without a line or a level...run him off.
