Well it’s been a while since the last post. Here’s what’s been going on in the shop this summer! We took a break from our Quarter Boards to finish the most challenging but also most rewarding project to date.
This is a 52” walnut dining table that seats 4-6 people comfortably. The table top is made up a combination of domestic walnut and Asian black walnut and the pedestal is made from one solid 6”x6” cut from the heart of a young walnut tree.
My grandfather himself sourced the Asian black walnut from the docks of New York harbor back in the 1960s. At the time it was easily obtainable since the shippers used walnut as dunnage(: a term used to describe the materials used to protect, support, and separate cargo during transportation and storage) and was discarded upon arrival to the states.
This project was particularly challenging because it was not my niche and the recipient is a person who is very important to me so I refused to settle but for the very very best when it came to every last detail.
