A story that is probably only funny to this goose and me, but the girls will understand immediately.
A local wildlife rehabber messaged us with what she called a "silly request". She asked if we could make a Canada goose instead of our traditional white porch goose. Ma'am. Be serious. That is not a silly request. That is a VISION. A MASTERPIECE. A HONK OF ART.
So we made her. She was stunning. Majestic. Slightly judgemental. Very lifelike and, as such, made me relive past goose trauma. Everything a Canada goose should be. We set her outside for pickup and then, because the universe loves drama, the tornado sirens in Noblesville started going off.
So there I am, shoving kids and dogs into the basement while hail is absolutely pelting the earth, the wind is whipping tree limbs around like we're in Twister, and suddenly I realize ...
THE GOOSE
MY CHILD IS STILL OUTSIDE.
And listen. Would she have probably been fine? Yes.
Did I sprint into the storm like a Victorian woman rescuing her beloved from war? Also yes. Because I am merely the guardian of these geese until they are united with their mothers, but I take that job VERY seriously (I whisper words for affirmation to every goose we create).
Was there an "incident" during the rescue operation where I accidentally bonked her head on the door frame hard enough to require minor plastic surgery? Unfortunately yes. Thoughts and prayers were appreciated during recovery.
But THAT 👏 IS 👏 NOT 👏 THE 👏 POINT.
I love your porch goose like it's my own until she is safely in your hands and on your porch. This is an open adoption. I expect updates. I want seasonal outfits. I want photos. I want to know if she is thriving emotionally.
Your husband might not get it (Michael absolutely does not). Your kids might call her cheugy (is that still an insult or nah?) But the millennial women? Oh, we get it. I get it.
And now just look at her. Thriving. Unbothered. Radiating confidence in her little sunhat under the loving care of her new mother.
Go live your best life, queen. Be well.
