⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘Sweet Harbor’ will reimagine Douglass Park as a hush harbor for ritual, mourning, and remembrance of Rekia Boyd’s life. ‘Sweet Harbor’ anchors around Rekia’s tree and unfolds within the grove. Wood elements are layered onto yellow steel spines that rise from the ground, bending and branching up towards the tree’s canopy. At the ground, the spines curve and take root, providing seating and respite for visitors. Throughout the spinal structure, openings, we’ve named beads, emerge within the sculpture where visitors can connect ribbons, rope for double dutch, and hair braiding directly to the sculptures. Rekia’s tree will remain an important marker of remembrance, serving as an altar where visitors are invited to bring offerings in the form of candles and ribbons.

After several years of engaging with the Design for Freedom movement , I’m honored to create a site-specific work for ‘With Every Fiber | Pigment, Stone, Glass’, an exhibition that brings visibility to ethical sourcing within architecture and construction.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘Material Clarity’ continues my exploration of how found and salvaged materials can be layered to form new spaces - both literal and imagined. In this piece, I focus on glass as a mediator: a material that connects us to the outside world while simultaneously defining boundaries of safety and separation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By reclaiming and recontextualizing glass, I aim to expose its dual role - as both a transparent barrier and a lens for reflection - inviting viewers to consider borders, boundaries and separation.

How it started...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2019 inspired by ‘s collage making as studies for her paintings, a small group of us from had a collage challenge. A collage a day for 40 days. Quick. Fast. Work with whatever you have. No overthinking it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shout out to for making us integrate collage into our architectural design process.

“Every building tells a story of humanity — either of dignity or exploitation. The untold story of buildings worldwide is that the materials that we build with – from the extraction of raw materials to the finished product – are largely unchecked and at risk of being produced with forced or child labor.” Sharon Prince, CEO and Founder of

The sharing of ideas amongst the recognition of challenges and the inspiration to act, in any way that we can, always leaves me feeling hopeful after the Design For Freedom Summit. This year’s was no different.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am delighted to have been able to share, in the space of the exhibition, the intention for ‘With Every Fiber’, our design of the exhibit, during one of the breakout sessions - sharing the discussion with of and Emily Altman of Grace Farms.

It is always satisfying to see years of work coming to life during construction.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The original building at 33 Washington Street designed by Welton Becket and Associates is one of the few modern buildings in Newark’s downtown. The ground floor, originally designed for an insurance company, will be transformed from an inward-looking space into an open and inviting hub of activity. It will feature destination retail spaces to be rented out using subsidized sub-leases to small retailers who have a base in Newark. Three sides of the vertical façade at the ground floor perimeter are opened up, with canopies added that bridge the outside and inside. A new central court and outdoor arcade pull the outdoors in and provide a space for activation. The renovation is part of Audible’s activation of the newly named Arts and Education district of Newark.

As a 2024–25 J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize recipient , we are thrilled to have been assigned the historic site of Eliel Saarinen’s First Christian Church.

‘Lift’ is grounded in the architectural legacy of the building while opening the sunken courtyard to new ways of connecting.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The installation responds to the lines and grids of the iconic building with a gridded base anchored to the lawn. Fabric moves organically through the lines of the cubes, connecting them and generating multiple ways of engaging within the varying spaces that it creates. The fabric extends upwards, becoming kite-like, with layered, colorful textures soaring above the datum of the upper plaza.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘Lift’ connects the heavenly and the earthbound, the faith community and the architectural treasure, the space of the church with the space of the larger Columbus community.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We hope to see you in Columbus, Indiana in August for the opening weekend!

On Monday we celebrated the unveiling of this public artwork that has been in the works for about a year and a half.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At The Square at uCity in Philadelphia’s science and technology neighborhood, the artwork looks back to the heritage of the Black Bottom to dream ourselves into the future. The pavilion marks the past by giving form to remembering and giving voice and vision to a West Philly/Black Bottom that doesn’t exist anymore and doesn’t exist yet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am thrilled to have found Yolanda Wisher, former Philadelphia poet laureate and Kendrah Butler-Waters, Philadelphia-based musician and composer, who transformed my vision for integrating poetry and the soundscape of West Philly block parties into a phenomenal original soundtrack that plays from the piece every day at noon.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The pavilion creates a visual and sonic conversation between space and people, a visible and invisible canopy of sound woven from community stories — an afrofuturist bricolage of past, present and future.

OPENING TOMORROW!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are thrilled to share the new permanent exhibit, With Every Fiber, will open at in New Canaan, CT, and to be part of this acceleration of Design for Freedom!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by Grace Farms Founding Creative Director, Chelsea Thatcher, and designed by , with , With Every Fiber offers visitors the opportunity to encounter by Grace Farms – the Foundation’s movement to eliminate forced labor in building materials supply chains – through a series of interactive material studies, from timber and steel to concrete and textiles.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Offering moments of education and contemplation, the exhibit also provides a tangible display of innovation solutions, including a tapestry of bio-based materials designed by , alongside contributions from poets, photographers, theologians, and others.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All are rooted in two questions at the core of Design for Freedom: “where do our building materials come from and are they made with fair labor?”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Learn more about With Every Fiber and the new outcomes being generated by Design for Freedom by Grace Farms at the link in our bio.

Forced labor is prevalent in the making of concrete, timber, metals, and textiles. A new exhibition gives us hope that change is possible.
