UPDATE: Wasn't heard on Thursday, now scheduled to be voted on in the House Friday, May 29th - for final vote to pass into law.
HB 804 has flown through our Legislature like only a good pro-industry bill can. Geymann at his best (for industry, not for the people of Louisiana).
This is the stated purpose of the bill: to “limit liability for climate change damages based on greenhouse gas emissions… and to protect energy users, producers, and related industries.”
Absolutely NOTHING, you notice, on public policy protecting citizens.
This bill/law will make it almost impossible for citizens affected by climate change to take companies to court, and this would include CCS-related lawsuits. Carbon dioxide, methane and several “forever chemicals” are among those defined in the bill as “greenhouse gases,” and so: “No covered civil liability action for climate change damages from greenhouse gas emissions, as defined in R.S. 30:1603, shall be brought, filed, or maintained by any person against any person in any court or proceeding in this state, including any claim, cause of action, or judicial or administrative proceeding.”
HB 804 The "Louisiana Energy Protection Act" has one purpose; to totally indemnify the billion-dollar energy producers in Louisiana.
