Simple kolrosed desert spoon. Been really enjoying trying some different designs- slowing down “production” and focusing a little more on each individual piece.

I really slowed down carving, basically stopped after my wife and I had a baby, but now that the baby is old enough to start holding spoons, it’s time to get back to making!
Feels good to finish a couple things- first a batch of honey dippers I carved from a log I found on the side of the road in New London.

This striped bass ornament was another non-spoon craft I worked on over December; it is actually one of the several types of fish I made…
I have always wanted to try making fish using driftwood, but I think that will be sometime down the road. While thinking about driftwood fish though, I thought about using wire and driftwood… then thought about using corks instead, because we had a few lying around!
I have to admit the actual product looked better than what I saw in my mind, and I am quite pleased with myself!

Another non-spoon thing I worked on over December was trying to figure out bird shapes… because there are a lot!
It started when I was working on decorating our baby’s nursery and I wanted to make a couple birds as part of a decoration. After making just a couple birds and looking up some pictures I realized there are way too many bird types and shapes to just figure out one!
I feel like this is going to be an ongoing interest, because I have already carved way to many birds; both terrible looking and some ok…
If anyone has any tips on what makes a bird shape a bird shape let me know!

Basket of spoons roasting by the fire.
One of the ways that dry winter air can be advantageous is spoons dry fast after being oiled- especially if put in front of the fire! Lol
These days I use organic hempseed oil to finish spoons, which I think doesn’t have a huge impact on wood color, and also has a very nice smell, which isn’t super strong, and doesn’t stand out too much on woodenware.
I used to use a beeswax/mineral oil combo but I never felt like it stayed in the wood or sealed it as well as the hempseed oil.

Throwback to last winter carving these bad boys… only one of them made it without cracking during drying- and trust me I used a lot of wood chips saved from carving in a garbage bag (what I think is the slowest, safest drying method). Usually I just use a ziplock bag and put as much of the spoon in as fits with whatever wood chips fit from the carving.
I find that winter can be the riskiest time to take wood from outside and carve it inside because of the contrast in moisture in the outside and inside air.
