RU Selling is a website that provides Rutgers (New Brunswick) students with a medium for selling and buying used textbooks to one another. This free service was designed by Rutgers students as a way to combat the ever increasing and unaffordable prices dictated by the local bookstores. The idea is that used books can circulate amongst students at a much more competitive bargain than that offered b
y local bookstores. RU Selling can be thought of as a Craigslist only for Rutgers (New Brunswick) students. The services provided by RU Selling will finally allow students to receive the fair market value for their textbooks in a safe and secure environment. RU Selling is a continuation of the original Rutgers textbook exchange website, myRux. myRux was created in the summer of 2011 to test the demand amongst Rutgers (New Brunswick) students for a service like this. The turnout for myRux was so tremendous that we decided to make a comprehensive site with graphics and features that students would appreciate. Being students ourselves, we know what the masses demand, and more importantly incur the same expense as a majority of the student body. Going to the local bookstores just to have a book you bought four months ago for $135 now being bought back from you for $8.65 can be exasperating. In addition, bookstores frequently take the book they've bought from you for $8.65 and restock it for the same face value you bought it for, $135. Instead of being caught in this manipulative cycle, were calling upon Rutgers students to unite in order to cut out any and all exploitative intermediaries. By doing business with other Rutgers student through RU Selling, we can collectively force local bookstores to finally start giving us fair deals. RU Selling intends to provide its users with an extensive database of books being sold and books demanded by other users. In addition to ensuring the longevity of the used book market, RU Selling will act as a platform for introducing other resources to students such as a broader marketplace where students can sell anything from electronic, furniture, or tickets to local events. As a whole we can direct change, but individually we lack the strength and resources necessary to prosper.
