The windows came first. Floor-to-ceiling black steel frames in every room, all of them facing the garden. Once those were set, the rest of the interior had its instructions. Linen drapery layered not to cover the glass but to give the light somewhere to land. A table positioned so the garden sits in every view. We at McALPINE strive for the conversation between inside and outside to never be a question, but to be the whole point.

Sage green cabinetry, rush chairs, a brick fireplace, brass overhead. A terracotta porch facing the water with teak that weathers slowly and well. Landscape paintings hung in a room with beams and over scaled bay window. This Baton Rouge estate was published in Architectural Digest and what made it worth publishing was the same thing that makes it worth living in. Every material chosen to age gracefully and feel like it belonged from the beginning.

I included this room in Evocative Interiors because it does what I am always reaching for. A foundation restrained enough that a single object can shift the feeling of the entire space.

For my debut book, Evocative Interiors, I worked under a simple philosophy: to think, to seek, to choose. To think critically about who lives in a space and how. To seek the emotional hook that makes a house particular to its people. To choose every material, every color, every piece with the knowledge that each decision shapes the next. These rooms are the result of that process, applied across years and across very different lives.

These iron chandeliers are 300 years older than the ceiling they hang from.

Hand-cast somewhere else, having lived a previous life somewhere else first. Three centuries of presiding over rooms that don't exist anymore.

Everything else in this Palm Beach living room was made to give them a quiet place to keep going.

The best rooms feel inherited. Even the ones I design today.

Every home should offer one space to entirely exhale. To recharge your battery and tend to yourself.

On our Atlanta project, the pool is one of those spaces. Quiet water and soft light at the end of a long Southern afternoon. Architecture, at its best, makes this kind of stillness possible.

My goal on every project is to boil it down to what is essential. To find the something about a person that lets the design grow from there.

On this Nashville house, that meant getting to know Mary. She is a cook and an entertainer. So when I started drawing the plan, I started with the kitchen. That was ground zero. That was where Mary was the center of her world. Everything else grew from it. A bay window over the creek let her watch her granddaughter from the stove, or a screened porch behind her made room for feeding and lounging...

Our work is as much about the relationship as it is about the product.

Every project I've ever done starts the same way. Not with aesthetic, but with the heart and seeking truth..

The Expressive Home is the longer version of that sentence. It's the practice of design as discovery, written down: how I find the hook for a project, how a place becomes the wellspring, how editing turns into the most generous thing you can do for a room.

It's also a love letter to the people who let me make their homes for them. They are the reason any of this is on the page.

The codes on this lot in Provincetown gave me almost nothing to work with. So I designed straight up.

What you are seeing is the result of a constraint I came to be grateful for. The house stacks rather than spreads. Tall windows climb its side so light can find its way through every level, and the dark cladding lets the whole thing recede into the shadow of the trees around it. A stone chimney holds it to the ground.
Place is the wellspring. The constraint was the gift that taught me to listen.
