When this chair arrived, it was in so many pieces I put it in a bucket to keep all the pieces together. I like the way it turned out.

I made this child’s chair on a bit of a whim by combining hickory and some other wood I had on hand. I think it turned out quite well. I actually made two and one went to a family that is expecting a baby soon.

When my daughter Maury lost her dog Kito last summer, I made a casket for him that led to a request for custom urns. Losing a family pet is a difficult time, and I have made these urns with a partition that can be used to house special momentos such as a collar, tag or lock of fur. They can be custom made in any size. I don’t wish that anyone would have need of one, but I think a handcrafted urn pays a special tribute to a member of the family.

Here are some close-ups of the walker table top I made for my friend John. I made this one with dowels underneath so it can hang on one side when not in use. If you would like a custom table top for someone you know, I am glad to talk with you about it.

My friend John asked me to make a custom wooden table top for his walker. Here is the result. It is designed to fold over the side to a hanging position as needed. Most of these table tops on the market are plastic and this one adds a touch of home with a hand-rubbed finish.

I just completed restoration of four antique ladder back chairs in need of new rush weave seats. I completed the look with a tung oil finish, which I love for the fact that it enhances the natural appearance of the rush.

Dr. B Woodworks

Dr. Peter Ballenger has 50 years of experience with woodworking. In the 1970s he worked alongside carpenters to restore our family’s 100-year-old log cabin, constructing a deck, new room, loft, and a spiral staircase. Located in Memphis, TN, Dr. Ballenger’s work has ranged from creating dining room tables and wooden bowls to boxes and writing instruments crafted from exotic woods and turned on a lathe. His focus now is on restoration of antique chairs and small tables, and he has learned the traditional crafts of “rush” weaving and caning to restore the seat in antique chairs. He enjoys applying his surgical skills to the art of restoring well-loved heirlooms.
