I had the privilege of visiting the Crazy Horse Memorial recently. The visit had me reflecting on a principle that enters conversations with clients regularly: legacy.
The project was initiated by a sculptor who was self-taught but nonetheless renowned after being asked by Chief Standing Bear. He worked the remainder of his life on the project, and some of his children and grandchildren carry on the project today.
Why Crazy Horse? According to the sculptor he is “…to be carved not so much as a lineal likeness, but more as a memorial to the spirit of Crazy Horse - to his people. With his left hand gesturing forward in response to the derisive question asked, ‘Where are your lands now?’ crazy Horse replied, ‘My lands are where my dead lie buried.’”
Today the mission of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation is to protect and preserve the cultures, traditions, and living heritage of all North American Indians.
It’s an inspiration- the legacy of a family dedicated to preserving the legacy of a people.
What does legacy and/or impact mean to you? How is it showing up?
