Just making sure everything is secure.

This custom room was designed, built, and installed for the homeowner, including this old jail door that we created using reclaimed wood and iron pipes.

Working closely with homeowners throughout the process is one of my favorite parts of what I do. We get to know what matters to them, work through the details together, and ultimately build something that feels like it belongs in their home.

And every once in a while, the finished project gives you a pretty good photo opportunity.

The work is important. So are the relationships built and the fun had along the way.

A custom piece doesn't have to be a huge project to be meaningful.

This blanket chest was built to match a couple's bedroom furniture, using reclaimed lumber with a pretty unique local history. The wood came from a house that was torn down when the Schwan's corporate office was built in the heart of Marshall in the 1970s.

We built the chest strong enough to double as a bench and lined the inside with aromatic cedar to help keep blankets fresh and protected.

I enjoy projects like this because the details are personal, right down to the material itself.

Words like these mean a lot to me.

When a client takes the time to tell us that they felt listened to, respected, and cared for throughout a project, that's something I don't take for granted.

The finished piece is important, but so is the experience of getting there. Building something for someone's home is personal, and I'm grateful for every client who trusts me with that responsibility.

Thank you for the kind words and for trusting Woodgrain Custom Builds with so many projects over the years. It's a privilege to be part of creating those pieces for you.

If we've had the opportunity to work together, we'd love to hear about your experience, too. Your reviews help other homeowners know what they can expect when they reach out to us.

Some pieces of furniture see more life than others.

Dining room tables host family meals. Coffee tables become gathering places. Bar tops become the backdrop for conversations, celebrations, and everyday moments.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy building custom tables.

They're more than furniture. They're often where people spend time together.

Every table we build is designed around the space it will live in and the people who will use it. Whether that's a dining table built for family gatherings or a statement piece designed around a specific vision, the goal is always the same: create something meaningful, functional, and built to last.

Every finished project has a starting point.

For this Douglas fir door, it started with lumber that has already lived a pretty interesting life.

This wood came from an old schoolhouse in South Dakota and has quite a bit of old patina on it. Before I can use it for the door, I have to mill through that weathered exterior and see what is underneath.

What I am looking for are those straight-grain sections. They give the door the stability it needs, while also bringing a clean, natural character to the finished piece.

There's something pretty rewarding about taking material with that kind of history and giving it a new purpose. This wood eventually made its way back to South Dakota, this time as a front door for a home in Gary that was built in 1912.

This video gives you a look at where the project started. I'll be sharing more of the finished door and the story behind it as we go.

Not every custom project needs to transform an entire room.

Sometimes a single piece can completely change how a space feels.

A mantel can become the focal point of a living room.

Floating shelves can add both function and character.

A thoughtfully designed statement piece can help a room feel finished in a way that off-the-shelf options sometimes can't.

What I enjoy about projects like these is that they allow homeowners to add something uniquely their own to a space without taking on a major renovation.

Small projects can make a big impact.

A workspace says a lot about a business.

It should be functional, welcoming, and built to support the people who use it every day.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to build custom office furniture for businesses looking for something that fits their space and needs better than what they can find in a catalog.

Every business works differently, which is why I approach commercial projects much like residential ones—by starting with a conversation and understanding what the space needs to do.

The goal isn’t just to furnish an office. It’s to create a space that actually supports the way people work.

I had the opportunity to meet my favorite author today. William Kent Krueger. He made me a reader. Last June I had maybe read 20 books in my life, but in the last year I have read 23 thanks to him. I've been alternating between his books and books from other authors. It's been an incredible journey to reading!

One of the most common things I hear from homeowners is: "We just can't find anything that fits."

Maybe the room has unusual dimensions. Maybe the storage isn't working. Maybe every option they've looked at feels like a compromise. That's where custom built-ins and cabinetry can make a difference.

Instead of trying to make stock cabinets fit a space, we start with the space itself. We talk about how it's used, what isn't working, and what you'd like it to do better.

From there, we build around your home rather than asking your home to adjust to a standard product.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about custom work. Every project starts with a unique challenge and ends with a solution designed specifically for the people who use it every day.

No two projects start the same way.

Sometimes a homeowner comes to me with a detailed plan and a clear vision. Sometimes they have a few photos saved on their phone and an idea of what isn't working in their home. Both are perfectly fine places to start.

One of the things I enjoy most about custom work is helping people take that first idea and turn it into something tangible.

Every home is different. Every family uses their space differently. Every project comes with its own goals and challenges.

That's what keeps the work interesting!

And it's one of the reasons no two finished projects ever look exactly alike.
