Every custom project starts with a conversation.

Before materials are selected or construction begins, there's a planning process focused on understanding how the space will be used, what matters most to the homeowner, and how every detail can work together to create something both functional and personal.

That was especially true for this Gun Room project.

The goal wasn't simply to create storage. It was to design a space that reflected the homeowner's interests, showcased a collection with care, and felt like it belonged in the home from the very beginning.

Every custom project has a starting point.

For this one, it starts with rough lumber on the shop floor.

I'm beginning work on a custom door project that we'll be documenting from start to finish. Right now, that means milling boards, evaluating grain patterns, and making decisions that will influence the final piece long before it starts to look like a door.

One of the things I appreciate about custom work is that there aren't shortcuts. Every step builds on the one before it. The time spent at the beginning matters just as much as the details people notice at the end.

Over the next several weeks, I'll be sharing this project as it comes together so you can see what goes into creating something that's built specifically for one home, one space, and one customer.

In a world where so much is mass-produced, I still believe there’s value in building something by hand.

That’s really what Woodgrain Custom Builds is about. I get to work with people who want something made for their home, their space, and the way they actually live. Not something pulled off a shelf and made to fit “close enough.”

Every project is different, and that’s the part I enjoy. The wood, the details, the function, the finish, it all comes together to create something that feels like it belongs.

That’s why I do this work.

We don't just order our materials online... we search out locally-sourced wood and hand-select every single board for each project.

Grain patterns, thickness, even character are considered when creating a piece that is truly one-of-a-kind.
