Introducing Isolde 🤎
A truly remarkable late 1800s to early 1900s English breakdown armoire, thoughtfully restored while preserving the history, craftsmanship, and soul that make pieces like this so special.
From the rich burl wood veneer and hand-carved detailing to the original maker’s tag still tucked inside from Pelaw-on-Tyne, England, every inch of this piece tells a story over a century in the making.
One of my favorite details is the authentic breakdown construction — designed in sections so these grand wardrobes could be moved through narrow staircases and historic homes. Inside, you’ll also find beautiful old dovetail drawer construction consistent with early English craftsmanship.
And perhaps the most charming part of Isolde’s story… when we first brought her home and assembled her, something felt just a little “off.” After some investigating, we realized she had actually been assembled upside down for decades by the family who had owned her for nearly 70 years.
Once returned to her proper orientation, all of her original proportions, crown detailing, and elegance suddenly came back to life — as though she had simply been waiting all these years to be seen properly again.
The softened walnut finish allows the incredible grain movement, mirrored doors, and carved details to shine while giving the piece an aged European warmth that feels timeless and collected.
The interior has intentionally been left open, allowing the next owner to customize it beautifully for:
• wardrobe storage
• linen cabinet
• statement bookcase/display
• entryway storage
• hidden office/media storage
This is not a mass-produced furniture store piece. It is history, artistry, craftsmanship, and character that has survived generations.
Honestly, this is one of the most special restorations to ever leave my workshop.
