This morning’s issue of the Valencia County news bulletin displays an add for the 2026 NMSF Texas Longhorn Show held on Sep 19th and 20th starting at 10am both days.

Pictured is Elijah Baca with his Texas Longhorn riding steer, Blaze. Elijah is a lifelong New Mexico resident and proudly serves as a Director of the Texas Longhorn Breeders of New Mexico (TLBNM).
The Texas Longhorn Breeders of New Mexico will host a Texas Longhorn Show during the second weekend of the New Mexico State Fair, on September 19-20, 2026. The exhibition will be open to the public and is included with paid fair admission.
The purpose of this event is to celebrate and promote the historic legacy of the Texas Longhorn breed, support ranchers and breeders, and educate the public about the breed's significant agricultural contributions. The show will feature elite Texas Longhorn genetics while highlighting the importance of youth involvement and leadership development within the agricultural industry.
Through events such as this, the TLBNM remains committed to preserving and promoting the heritage, value, and future of the iconic Texas Longhorn breed.

What Is the Purpose of the NMSF Texas Longhorn Show?

When people attend a show, they often think the judges are simply picking the “prettiest” animal. In reality, a show is about evaluating structural correctness, functionality, and breed standards—the traits that help preserve the Texas Longhorn for generations to come.

Judges carefully evaluate each animal from the ground up, looking at things such as:

* Sound feet and leg structure
* Proper hoof shape and angle
* Correct hock and rear leg conformation
* Body balance and muscling
* Breed character and horn development
* Overall soundness and athletic ability

An animal with strong structural correctness is more likely to remain healthy, travel efficiently, reproduce successfully, and have a long, productive life. These evaluations help breeders make informed decisions that improve the breed while preserving the unique characteristics that make the Texas Longhorn so special.

The diagrams below illustrate some of the structural traits judges evaluate in the show ring.

It's a DOUBLE SHOW this year - one show Saturday and one show Sunday. Make sure when you enter, you enter for BOTH shows.

Entries for the 2026 New Mexico Texas Longhorn Show are open. They close at the end of the month so make sure you get everything in. The main two reminders are that each animal can only be entered in the haltered or non-haltered not both and read the premium book, all entries are final, they do not issue any refunds. Also a friendly reminder that safety is our top priority so please bring your easy to handle animals. Our main goal is to help promote the breed and have a great time. Dates of the show is Sep 19-20!
