A new style project for me! I let this white oak cookie dry in the shop for a few weeks under some weight, and now it’s time to get to work! What would you make with this piece?

Sanding, sanding, sanding, and little more sanding. That's the order of the day. Welcome back to the quebracho desk build! Did I mention there was some sanding done on this project? As my fellow woodworking nuts know, sanding is the name of the game when it comes to finishing any project. The difference here is I'm trying to sand something that just doesnt want to be sanded! LOL Being the hardest, densest wood in the work, make a scratch is easier said than done! This equates to basically a full two days of moving this sander across the surface until the grit scratches are gone. I must have went through 5 boxes of sanding pads! I think the final product will show this effort nicely when it comes time to wipe on the finish. I am very ready to see the end, and it is near!

Welcome back the the quebracho desk build! Check out the legs! Fully painted and ready to go! A quick sand of the primer and then 3 coats of black satin enamel. This is definelyatly one of the most satisfying results of any project. All the prep work and fine imperfections show through with the top coat. I think they turned out great and I'm excited to see this be installed. The epoxy cheques from yesterday are still curing so I'll address those later, but the homestretch is here, and its full steam ahead!

The devil is in the details! Welcome back the the quebracho desk build!
This is the moment where the details very much matter! I always tell folks, all of the lumber we use in everyday life was very much alive while growing. Trees hold an incredible amount of water, sometimes over 100 gallons in a large mature tree. When that tree is harvested, cut up into slabs for furniture, and dried, an enormous of water leaves the cells of the wood. This process constricts the fibers of the wood, generating an enormous internal force. As the wood continues to dry and the stresses increase, little cracks, or cheques can develop in the wood. Now, most folks probably would never notice, but I'm a stickler for perfection. Every little cheque or void is filled with the same color epoxy as the center. This creates a perfectly smooth surface and adds natural depth to the piece that its user can admire. Aside from looking great, this also keeps out unwanted moisture from the air or an accidental spill from your coffee, and seals the wood even further to keep seasonal shifts in temperature and humidity from affecting the top as much. What looks like a random mess at first will improve the overall look and feel in the end. Thank y'all for following along!

"A grinder and paint, makes me the welder I ain't!". Welcome back the quebracho desk build!
I've lived by this quote for the majority of my fabrication projects in the past. Fortunately, I've since learned that welding takes practice, preparation and patience, which has led me to improving my overall welding skills. Today I finished welding the legs to the mounts, and spent quite a while grinding, shaping, filing, sanding and blending the steel legs to get them ready for paint. What we see here is hours of prep work hidden behind about 15 minutes of automotive epoxy primer! It feels good to finally paint raw steel because it always has the chance to flash rust and add hours of work to the schedule. Now that the legs are primed, I can once again switch my focus on preparing the top for finishing, stay tuned for that! Thank y'alll for following along!

Welcome back to the quebracho desk build! Time to dive into the final shaping stages of the top.
As with any woodworking project, nothing feels truly final until it’s done—and deciding on the edge detail was no exception. I wanted something that screamed high quality and craftsmanship without clashing with the sharp triangles of the base. A simple roundover didn’t feel right, and after modeling a few options in SketchUp, nothing hit quite like a large undercut bevel. It tapers the bottom edge, drawing the eye gracefully from top down for that sleek, intentional look.
Quick trip to Rockler, and I came back with a beefy 30° bevel router bit. Back in the shop, it was another delicate operation—slow, steady passes (four total) to keep the bit cool, preserve the edge, and avoid any mistakes. A razor-sharp tool and careful planning were key.
Once the main bevel was cut, I added a subtle 45° micro-bevel on the top to soften the sharp corner where hands and wrists rest. Practical and clean.
What do you think—did it come out okay? Does it deliver that high-end, crafted feel we’re going for?

Welcome back to the quebracho desk build—WHAT A DAY!
If you’ve ever jumped into a creative project without a full roadmap, knowing one wrong move could ruin it all… yeah, that nail-biting feeling was me today. CNC programming and milling, solving problems on the fly, and praying I didn’t mess up the big cuts!
Huge shoutout to the Origin—this thing is absolutely incredible. Designed the template for the leg base pockets, laid it out, cut the pockets, and even drilled the holes for the threaded inserts—all handled by the Origin. There were challenges (plenty!), but twice as many lessons learned. I’m super thrilled with how this cam out. Clean, deep pockets perfectly positioned for the embedded leg plates. Next time will be even smoother and faster.
What do you think—does this hidden mounting approach look like it’s going to deliver that sleek, hardware-free vibe we’re chasing?
Thanks for riding along—progress shots incoming!

Welcome back to the quebracho desk build, the milling is finally done!
Today marked a big milestone: I settled on the leg mounting system. I spent way too much time scrolling through other projects online, but nothing quite sparked excitement. So I designed my own solution, one that looks killer and will hold up flawlessly for decades (long after I’m gone).
A quick run to the steel yard and I purchased some 6" x 5/16" plate steel. Yeah, it’s overkill, but this slab is a beast and needs a rock-solid foundation.
If you’ve ever spent time cutting, grinding, or drilling through thick plate, you’ll feel my pain, this was no quick job! But four identical mounting plates are now complete.
The plan: embed them flush into the underside of the slab where they’ll be completely hidden. This gives the desk that clean, sleek, minimalist look it deserves. Once the plates are secured in place, the legs get welded directly to them for maximum strength and simplicity.
Can’t wait to see it all come together—thanks for following along!
