Well; this is it. the "Hogan Family Crest" left the shop this afternoon. It was a re-finish job I have been working on for weeks, and the last piece to ever come out of Barefoot Creations Woodworking in Vegas. My shop is officially closed now. I know it is not the end of Barefoot, but I am heavyhearted tonight.
Seven years ago, I put a simple ad on Craigslist; "Journeyman Cabinet Maker looking for work." hoping to get a job with a cabinet shop. No shops called, but I started getting calls from folks all around the valley who needed stuff done that the big shops didn't want to deal with.
I started with little more than a cheesy little table saw, a 30+ year old circular saw, belt sander, drill and router, with 3 or 4 burned out bits, but somehow, I started building cabinets and stuff with them. Doggy Beds, Surfboard Coffee Tables, Display cabinets, 800 gallon Mermaid tank....
Many trips to the Flea-Market when I could, to buy a "new-to-me" screw gun, or nail gun, or chop-saw, or planer, or...
The shop just kept growing.
Then I did a job for the City of Henderson. When the job was done and I drove down to get paid, they said they can only cut a check to a business account. The bank said I needed a "Fictitious Firm Name". Had to borrow the money, but I made it to City Hall, got the name, got the check and made it back to the bank before closing. Only to find that the check needed 24 hours to clear.
Next thing I know, I'm a licensed business owner with accounts all over town with the best suppliers for lumber, hardware, finish products and tool supplies. The funnest moment was standing in the "Merchant" line at the bank in my cut-offs, sandals, and over-sized t-shirt with the sleeves cut off. (it was 115 degrees). You should have seen the looks.
I'm gonna miss this place.
See you in Indiana. :-)
