Superstorm SANDY toppled this huge tree onto this historic building in my hometown. Pushed it to the left about 5 feet off the foundation. The stone building was our original jail back in the day.

So here is another Handy-man Tip of the Day! It is clearly going to get really COLD this week. Multiple days below freezing WILL cause problems to your pipes if you are not protected.
- Cover your outdoor faucets with the insulated covers, available at your local home center. Turning off the water and opening the faucet also helps, as long as it doesn't leak too much.
- Pipes in garages, crawl spaces and in exterior walls that aren't properly insulated can freeze. Tip - open the kitchen door and let some heat go into the garage or crawl space if possible. Pipes in cabinets on exterior walls will do well if you open the cabinet doors. WARNING: Space heaters can be dangerous! Old or unattended heaters have been known to keep the pipes from freezing but burning down the house probably wasn't your intention. :)
- Drain pipes typically are underground but often not very deep. This kind of freeze can cause them to freeze and PVC pipe can crack easily. Let a faucet in the house drip and it will prevent ice from forming. 2-3 days of water dripping might cost $2-$3, but a plumber costs $50 per hour!
Finally, don't forget the CARS, ANIMALS, PLANTS and KIDS!!! (That's another poster's job!)
