Formed Stone Design

Formed Stone Design An artisan concrete studio dedicated to making the finest sinks, countertops, fire features, and furniture available.

Formed Stone Design is an artisan concrete studio owned and operated by Eric and Miranda Dennis. We specialize in custom concrete furnishings using eco-friendly materials and operating practices. From our shop in Iuka, IL, we handcraft such items as sinks, countertops, fire features, tiles, cladding panels, water features, and anything else that may proceed from our minds or that of the architect,

designer, or homeowner. Focusing on design, artistry, and form, we see ourselves as artists and not merely fabricators. We love designing and building unique sinks that will elicit far more gazing than hand-washing and countertops with function and character, thinking in three dimensions rather than two.

Bars of Progress: Concrete and rebar form the foundation of all modern civilization, the infrastructure upon which society progresses. Yet each rung of progress becomes exponentially more difficult to reach as we advance ourselves back into barbarism.

Our latest delivery: two 6' Fluidity concrete sinks, made famous by Formed Stone Design, LLC, with ADA-compliant stainless steel bases. These will be featured at the newly renovated Bissinger's chocolate factory event space as a tiny portion of their $11 million renovation of a $4 million historic building in St. Louis. Go and wash your hands there sometime.

A project from a few months ago (still waiting for installed photos). You've never seen concrete -- or a vanity -- like this before. Sink and drawer fronts are concrete, and the whole assembly is designed as a torsion box to span a 7' space, supported only at each end -- with absolutely no deflection to throw off the super-tight clearance between the drawer fronts and the vanity top. Lots of steel and wood structural components that you don't see here. A beautiful marriage of engineering and art. I even performed bending stress and moment of inertia calculations.

I was just informed that the President sat on our bench today (well, the bench with our concrete solar console on it) at the White House Maker Faire. Not sure where we could possibly go from here...

We are honored to be working with the team at Changing Environments on their smart urban seating project. Their goal is to "update the city for our generation," and they have really gotten a lot of attention with their initial prototypes. They have designed a really attractive bench featuring a steel base, wood seat, and concrete solar-charging console with USB plugins and have selected us to build the concrete consoles for them. Here are the first three leaving the shop.

These will begin to pop up first in the Boston area and then, who knows? Maybe your city will get one. The first completed bench will make its debut at the White House Maker Faire on the 18th.

We can't take credit for this cool design, but developing the mold design and fabrication process has been quite a challenge. There are several unseen difficulties with this one.

Working on an ADA-compliant, commercial vanity with a steel base and our signature Fluidity sink design... and a steel-framed mirror. Uh oh, we have now expanded our product offerings above the 36" elevation mark. Where will we stop?!
