For those hanging bait hives/swarm traps. My bee club in Kansas started this several years ago. It is a lot of fun! Competitive? That too! The rules could be tailored to individual clubs, for example we normally start April 1.

Bait Hive Challenge
2026 Official Rules
MCBA Bait Hive Challenge will run 4/1/2026-6/30/2026, with the conclusion being at the MCBA July Meeting.
1.No cost to enter but must be a club member to participate.
2. All participants must register by posting “I’m In” on the Montgomery County Beekeepers Association Kansas page, ALONG WITH A PICTURE OF EACH, NUMBERED, bait hive/trap that you set up. Please attach all individual pictures in the same post. Registration ends on 4/31/2026.**Note: Confirmed catches will be counted during the entire registration period.
3.A successful capture will consist of a Facebook video post of a bee with pollen on leg(s), CLEARLY going into one of the participant’s registered bait hives/traps entrances, OR a Facebook video of bees in and amongst the frames from the participant’s registered bait hive/trap posted onto the MCBA page. Once coordinator has responded "Swarm Confirmed" points will be given.
4.Every successful capture is worth 10 points, which will be recorded under the participants name on the official scorecard. The official scorecard will be held by an MCBA officer or designated club member.
5.The first five (5), DIFFERENT participants to post successful captures will receive an additional 10 bonus points. (Participants can only be awarded these bonus points, one time.)
6.Points for all participants will be recorded, tabulated, and posted on MCBA’s page regularly.
7.Voting for Best Overall Bait Hive/Trap -20 pts and Ugliest Bait Hive/Trap 20 pts will be held on May 1, on the page. Details to come.
8.At the end of the Bait Hive Challenge on June 30th, all points will be tabulated and winners will be announced.
***Ties will be broken between participants using the earliest confirmed capture date, based on the MCBA Facebook timeline.
1st Place will receive Bragging Rights, a $30 prize and the traveling “Queens’s Cup” trophy where your name will be enshrined for all eternity.
2nd place will receive a $20 beekeeping related prize.
3rd place will receive a $10 beekeeping related prize.
