Propagate

Propagate Making agroforestry work for farmers and landowners Propagate also actively manages over 100 commercial acres and growing through its agroforestry hubs.

Our platform makes it easy to access the operational know-how, implementation tools, financing and off-take agreements needed to reduce business risks while integrating fruit, nut and timber trees with animal or crop farming systems. By helping farmers focus on permanent crops in regenerative agriculture, a practice known as agroforestry, farmers become more resilient and investors earn great retu

rns while building the next generation of regenerative farms. Propagate is a Techstars-backed company, a portfolio company of Elemental Excelerator as well as Exelon Corporation’s inaugural 2c2i cohort. Propagate currently advises across 10,000 acres of agroforestry in the USA, supporting nearly 500,000 trees & shrubs.

To mill lumber, you need trees.
To justify planting timber trees, you need markets.
The circular economy principles are strong here, and we’re thrilled to partner with to grow, mill, and proliferate black locust in the built environment.

Propagate is an agroforestry project developer and operator helping farms integrate commercial tree crops, especially chestnuts, into working landscapes. We design, establish, and manage tree based farming systems that can be paired with pasture, annual crops, livestock, or ecological buffers to improve resilience, soil health, and long term farm economics.

Propagate provides the technical and operational support that makes agroforestry repeatable at commercial scale. Our work spans planning, technical assistance, project development, and long term management to reduce risk for farmland owners, growers, and partners to help turn tree crops into reliable agricultural production.

Founded in 2017, Propagate has supported agroforestry planning on more than 55,000 acres across the United States. Through regional hubs in New York and Kentucky, we have planted more than 250,000 trees and own and operate a 580 acre agroforestry portfolio across New York, Tennessee, Ohio, and Kentucky. Propagate is a Techstars alum, an Elemental Impact portfolio company, and has been recognized twice on the Inc. 5000 list.

We’re thrilled to partner with to bring black locust timber to market. Growing trees on farms increases water quality, provides livestock shelter, and drives income for farmers across the rural United States. Many of the hundreds of thousands of trees we plant will become structural round wood beams and posts for indoor and outdoor structures. Black locust yields beautiful and functional wood that is rot-resistant and extremely durable. It’s a fast-growing hardwood native to the Allegheny Plateau and the surrounding bioregions of the eastern half of the United States.

WholeTrees vision is to create prosperity between forests and communities. WholeTrees uses the inherent strength of Structural Round Timber (SRT) and millions of years of organic structural engineering to provide beautiful, affordable, sustainable, and durable biophilic structural systems that restore forests.

Founded in 2007 on an off-grid forest farm in Southwest Wisconsin, the founding team brought CAD and BIM to the organic shapes of SRT, fabricated ground-breaking, first-of-its-kind structural systems across the country and launched sustainable forestry partnerships to become the National leader and unrivaled expert in engineering unmilled timber for commercial construction.

Whether you are inspired to incorporate whole trees at the start of your project or are seeking to integrate them within current structural systems, has the products, partnerships, and technology to seamlessly support your vision.

If you’re looking to plant black locust on farmland in the eastern half of the United States, please send a message or contact us via our website.

How are we paying for trees?
How are *you* paying for trees?

At the end of the day, there is no free lunch. We’re either paying with our time, or paying with our wallet.

We’re going to explore both sides of that coin, and hopefully leave you with a better understanding of funding agroforestry in the United States. If you’re not in the US, you’ll still get a lot out of this episode.

Agroforestry often falls into the domain of the innovators, in the left tail of the curve. However, there are regions of the world, namely Latin America, where agroforestry is a golden child of the early majority. In South America, the agroforestry room is full of agronomists. Dialogue is that of production and profitability.

If our objective is to scale and replicate agroforestry, we should implement tree systems that are accessible to more farmers and landowners. Regardless of ecological intent and ethos, agricultural systems that create cultural momentum are those that will grow.
