Craftsman's Passion

Craftsman's Passion Specializing in crafting Handmade Furniture, Antique Restoration, Millwork, and Pattern Work. I have been working with wood since I was a teen. I didn't care.

For years I worked in construction trades and was able to learn the basic and fundamental skills as a woodworker. I have framed houses, siding, interior trim, decks, all the usual stuff Then in the mid 90's I was fortunate to know and work with some great men and women building Polo and Tommy Hilfiger stores across the nation. This work enabled me to fund a life long dream and passion of wanting t

o build furniture. I opened the Craftsman's Passion in 1997 while living on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. At first everyone said I was foolish , that know one would want furniture that costs more than what the big manufactures prices were. I surrounded myself with information that was contrary to that thought. Reading Architectural Digest, and Fine Woodworking magazines and other trade magazines kept my vision clear that there were people that wanted what I wanted to make. Then I bumped into an interior decorator that opened the doors for me. She had the clientele and they owned homes as investments and vacation property. That kept me busy as I could be and with some great employee/friends was able to create some awesome works. Since that time I had developed some additional skills as a Pattern Maker for the foundry at the Shipyard, it lacked art but refined my skills that did not exist and also helped me define that it wasn't just woodworking I loved, it was creating functional art. So onward to my pursuit of making functional art. I now live near Richmond and have started over in a new life, location and am creating in ways like never before. Come join me in my pursuit of creating art, functional art.

Our Story

I have built everything along the way through my career: from houses, to stores, to remodeling a courthouse, pattern making for nuclear aircraft carriers and a submarine, parts for the famous Wright Flyer replica, historic window restoration, cannons, chicken coops, and yes of course my favorite, Furniture.

I started working with wood as a teenager in wood shop. After graduating high school, I worked as a merchant seaman. While on a tugboat in the Gulf of Mexico one of my fellow seaman showed me how to make countertops for the galley with some basic tools. I thought that was cool. When I moved back home to Williamsburg a friend of mine asked if I would help him make cabinets for his kitchen. He offered me a place to stay and in exchange, I made his cabinets. While buying all the materials, the owner of the lumber store, offered me a job. I worked with him for a few years and learned all he had to offer. I went on to owning my own construction company and built houses as a sub contractor. In time I landed a job building Polo and Tommy Hilfiger stores nationwide. All along my passion was to begin building furniture full time and so I bought tools, furniture books, and trade magazines and practiced the craft. In 1996 I took a class on Windsor bow back chair making. That changed everything, and propelled the opening of my furniture business, now with over 20 year’s experience.

I find my best work comes from the heart of my client. When a furniture piece is commissioned, I pull from them the function, then add the design and work with them to select material, dimensions and design, creating a one of a kind piece.
