Here is the finished product of the framed prints. Still need to add hanging hardware and get them on the wall for my daughter. I think they turned out good for the first attempt at this kind of thing.

Aside from shop projects, next thing is to get this bathroom cabinet refinish finally done. It's been over a year since I started that and it's been long enough.

I have to admit that I have a bit of a dust problem in the shop. Started working on that today, having the day off for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Cleaned out the shop vac and the dust-right separator. Then changed out the filter and added a bag to see if I can't get a handle on this. I also started working on another project to help with this that I'll share later.

One day I may be able to not work in a cloud of sawdust.

Thought I'd post a quick set of photos around how I stretched the canvas.

1. After centering frame on the canvas, tack the canvas in the middle of each side, stretching the canvas tight. Hopefully you have access to some canvas stretching pliers.
2. Staple along the edge toward a corner, pulling the canvas tight as you go.
3. Fold and tuck as shown here.
4. Because the excess canvas in the corner can cause the corner to bulge a bit, you can cut out the excess before tacking the corner.
5. Fold the canvas over and tack the corner.

There's a couple of videos (linked below) that I used on YouTube as a guide to build the frames and to learn how to stretch the canvas. These were helpful. I will say that it would have been better if I had either a larger canvas or had made the frames slightly smaller. I went with this size of frame to maximize the amount of printed canvas that was visible. Ideally, you'll have a few inches that overlap on each side (see stretching video). I only had about 1 1/2". Still, it worked out well.

Finally set up for putting canvas on frames. I've got the staples, scissors, etc. to get the work done. One thing that turned out to be extremely helpful were the levels (only one shown here). Used them more as canvas weights to keep the canvas held down and flat while I got the things measured, marked, and centered.

I will say that I am happy with the new staple gun I bought to do this work. It's a new 61705 pneumatic T-50 stapler that I saw on an YouTube video (https://youtu.be/BIf7fuOIB1Q). Really inexpensive and really good quality. Thanks for the video, Adam. Now, bring on the canvas/upholstery!

Oh, and Adam, the shop apron you designed is freakin' awesome! I bought one a few months back and I love it! The wife thinks I have an unhealthy obsession. 😁

Wow, it's been almost 3 months. Been busy with a new day job that is awesome and has kept me out of the shop for a bit. I was able to start working on these. Lots of parts, lots of frames. These were built to stretch some pictures for a Christmas gift. Did I mention that I don't have many clamps? No worries. These aren't under a lot of stress, so a simple butt joint "clamped" with worked just right. Thanks for handy clamps. The molding on the outside of the frame keeps the canvas up off of the frame and lets you stretch it like a drum head. Total made 10 frames for two sets of pictures. Good to get out in the shop a bit.

Took Saturday to do a couple of more shop projects before diving back into a project following the . Got the stair put in so we can now actually use the door between the house and the garage. Also got this awesome lumber rack from installed on the wall and moved the 2x4s I had sitting on the floor up onto the wall and out of the way until I can use them. Had the boy helping me most of the day and had a lot of fun. Hope he did as well.

Stage X, The Finish. After many hours of painting and repainting (hint: make sure the drawers are in right side up when you spray an ombré finish), it's finally done. I described the final product to the wife as the "furniture mullet", business on the outside and party on the inside. There are a couple of things still to do, like line the drawers with velvet. I need to find the right colors first. Then, we let the kids fight over who is going to keep it. Thanks for the challenge . It's been fun!

Stage 5, The Overview. So, it's taken a couple of weeks working on Saturdays and evenings, but it's finally done. I'll be posting the final pictures here shortly, but wanted to just summarize what I needed to do. The part that is missing is watching all of the sanding (there was a lot), and all of the taping (trying to get clean lines, etc.). Still some work to be done. I really want to line the drawers with some velvet, but I need to get the right colors for that. Maybe a dark red for the bottom drawer and yellow for the top drawer. Anyway, check back in a bit for the final reveal. I'm a bit biased, but I think it looks pretty cool. Now do I let the kids fight for it, or do I put it on the market?

BTW, doing this ombré paint is pretty fun.

Stage 3, The Workaround. Well really a couple of tips that seem to have worked.

Tip 1, if you are working with MDF furniture (parts of this piece are MDF), the edges soak up paint like you wouldn't believe. You can use a little joint compound or spackle and coat the edges and then sand it smooth. This fills the MDF and keeps it from drinking up all of the paint/primer.

Tip 1, I found out that spray paint nozzles have this little white piece on them that you can move. This allows you to change the direction of the spray fan while you paint, meaning you don't have to tilt the can as much. Well done ! Well Done!

Everything is now primed and we're moving on to the color!

Stage 2, The Sad Trombone. Not sure you can see on the case how much the original finish shows through the primer. That means, a second coat is in order. I'm hoping that will do the trick. I'd hate to get the colors on there only to have this pink tinge come through. The legs and the bottom shelf look good though. I should be able to start color on those today while the second coat of primer dries on the remainder of the pieces.

Stage 1, The Primer. Got the primer on over the weekend. If I can pull this off, it's going to look cool. Ran into a couple of issues I needed to fix where the case started to pull apart a bit. Nothing a little glue can't fix. I'm really excited to see if this turns out.
