We are still in the process of rebuilding a bar for the .grill in Evanston. The restaurant used to house Evanston Fire Engine 22 and Truck 22 until a new quarters was built for those companies down the road in 1954. With the history of the firehouse, we thought it would be fitting to build the bar using a Japanese technique of burning wood called Shou Sugi Ban. When we finish up we will post the before and after photos and go more in depth of this really fun project.

Time to join the slabs and make a massive bar top come to life. In order get all the angles accurate, we built a template out of 1/8” plywood and some hot glue. After making the cuts we used a hand plane to make the miters join as tight as possible. We used dominos to join the slabs together. To draw the miters in as tight as possible we cut small blocks, super-glued them to the top and clamped the pieces together.

The bar is going to be topped with a live edge Elm slab. It will be upwards of 14’ and needing a fair amount of with a black and silver metal flake added. We used hot glue to damn up areas needing a tall pour of epoxy. Next we will need to make some miter cuts to form the angles we need. Stay tuned!
