The “People Waiting for Coffee” project began as a simple attempt to capture the quiet, everyday moments of people in line for their daily cup. I wasn’t specifically looking for firefighters, but with the LA fires unfolding, one happened to be waiting next to my chair. He graciously allowed me to take his portrait while he waited for his order.

He and thousands of other firefighters traveled from across California, Mexico, and beyond to help battle the recent LA fires. This portrait captures one of them—from Tahoe—taking a brief pause for coffee. His presence here symbolizes the countless responders who left their own communities to protect ours. We owe them our profound gratitude for their tireless efforts in this time of crisis.

Meet Mars, a 3-year-old sweetheart currently being fostered by a fellow artist at the Makers Market in Glendora, CA. With her calm and gentle temperament, Mars is the perfect companion. Her manners were impeccable—she only hopped onto the chair for this photo after we gave her the go-ahead. Once she knew it was okay, she struck a pose like a natural!

If you’d like to learn more about Mars or give her a loving forever home, I’ve tagged her foster in the picture.

Days spent photographing adorable pups and sipping coffee? I’d say I’m pretty lucky. ☕️

The coffee shop was unusually quiet today, perhaps due to the LA fires and smoke rolling over the foothills in the distance, slowing the usual pace. Even so, I set up my white sheet and reflectors but decided to embrace a brighter, softer approach by using the large window as a backdrop, taking advantage of the extra space and natural light. I even commandeered one of the shop’s comfiest chairs to complete the setup.

My first subject was a kind man with a Gary Oldman-like vibe and his incredibly photogenic dog, Arthur. There’s truly nothing like capturing a furry companion and their loved one to bring a little joy to the day.
