I can't have nice furniture. I have a cat.

I hear that all the time.

In many cases, the problem isn't the cat. It's that the home wasn't designed with the cat in mind.

Most of us design rooms based on how they look. Cats experience those same rooms very differently.

We notice furniture, artwork, and color.

Cats notice travel routes, visibility, hiding places, and opportunities to climb, scratch, and observe.

Once you start seeing your home through your cat's eyes, many of their behaviors begin to make a lot more sense.

That's the idea behind behavior-informed design.

I think one of the biggest myths about interior design is that people hire a designer because they want a prettier house. ✨

Most of the time, they're looking for something much deeper.

They want to feel at home again. 🏡

I'm working with a client who bought a vibrant rug while traveling in Turkey years ago. She has always loved it, but she could never make it work in her living room.

As we started talking, something became clear.

The rug wasn't the problem. 🧐

Her home was still telling the story of a chapter she'd already outgrown.

The furniture felt too traditional for who she is today. The layout never invited people to gather. She'd reached a point where she was ready for something new.

So we're not just finding a place for a beautiful rug.

We're reimagining the entire room around it. 🪄

Now she'll have rooms in her home she's excited to invite friends into, curl up with a book in, and enjoy every single day. ☕📚

That's my favorite part of this job!

Helping people create homes that grow with them instead of reminding them of who they used to be. 💛

My cat is destroying my house!

I hear versions of that all the time.

One of the biggest things I've learned from Dr. Bobby, Chief of Staff at Aspen Grove Vet Care, is that many behaviors we see as "bad" are actually cats trying to meet perfectly normal behavioral needs. Sometimes the environment plays a much bigger role than we realize.

Veterinarians call the process of meeting those needs "enrichment"

Enrichment isn't just about buying more toys or another scratching post.

It's about creating opportunities for cats to do what comes naturally: climb, observe, scratch, explore, hunt and forage, and rest where they feel safe.

When those opportunities are missing, cats often find their own ways to meet those needs—and that's when many of the behaviors we find frustrating begin to appear.

As an interior designer, that completely changed the way I think about homes for cat lovers. What if enrichment for your furry family member was considered from the beginning as part of the design plan?

I'm calling this approach behavior-informed design.
