The Common Good

The Common Good We are building a mobile tool shop for the grassroots production, repair and maintenance of housing, personal items and wares for houseless folks in Eugene

in 2012, designBridge received a Project Grant from The Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics for a proposal addressing their theme, “Capitalism and the Common Good.”

designBridge proposed a process of direct community engagement with those most marginalized by capitalism, to support the agency of all citizens in shaping their own lives. The Common Good team set out to design a model process th

at could be repeated by citizens in other cities, by documenting their process of research, inquiry and dialogue to identify the needs that they were most suited to address. through this process, The Common Good recognized that the lack of common infrastructures of production was greatly suppressing the productive capacities and needs of marginalized urban citizens. students are now designing a mobile tool shop and make station that will be malleable to the changing needs of houseless Eugene residents, serving as a scaffold for a variety of needs, which may include: shelter construction, tent repair, bike maintenance or wares fabrication. in May of 2013, The Common Good partnered with Opportunity Village Eugene [OVE], an innovative model for self-supported transitional housing in West Eugene on the make-station. Thanks to everyone who came out for the ribbon cutting this last Saturday - we had a wonderful time fixing bikes and celebrating the completion of this new piece of infrastructure for the residents of Opportunity Village Eugene, and for the community at large. We have more photos coming, but here is a peek at some of the festivities of the day. Thanks again to all who helped make this project possible, INCLUDING (but not limited to!): S.L.E.E.P.S., Reality Kitchen, First Christian Church, Saturday Market, Marty at Larry's Sheet Metal, the good people at Allied Building Products and Multi-Craft Plastics, Northwest RV Supply, Jim and Glenn at Platt Electric and sooooo many more! Will get more photos up soon, and keep everyone updated on where to find our final project/process documentation. Thank you everyone!
