Original Log Homes East is a full service company that has been custom designing, building and finishing log homes in the Western Pennsylvania area for more than 27 years. Founded in Ellwood City in 1985 by Dave and Sally Fornataro, we strive to offer one of the finest quality custom log homes that the industry has to offer.
We start each custom log home by hand selecting live healthy, mature trees - never bug killed or fire killed. Engleman Spruce is the most common type of log we use. Lodge Pole Pine, Douglas Fir and Western Cedar are also available. They are harvested in the winter months, when the sap is low, from the dry belt of British Columbia, Canada, then air dried or seasoned for twelve to eighteen months to achieve a moisture content between 15% and 19%. At Original Log Homes East we are committed to craftsmanship. Your unique and beautiful handcrafted log home is now ready for our highly skilled and dedicated craftsman, using large natural full length, full round logs. An average size diameter of 14" (16" to 24" logs are also available). We carefully lay out the home according to plan and fit the logs using a Swedish cope, full scribe method, with a shrink to fit Norwegian saddle notched corner. A V-Shaped lateral is cut out along the length, which is filled with fiberglass insulation. This is a chinkless style log home construction, with the option of adding chinking if desired. All this craftsmanship is done using only chainsaws, chisels and axes with very limited use of power tools (such as a power sander for the logs ends).
