I met so many new and dope people yesterday at the Detroit Powwow I want to take this moment to reintroduce myself.

My name is Stephan Oak and I am Lakota of the Kul Wicasa Oyate out of Lower Brule South Dakota. I’ve held just about every job under the sun. I’ve worked on the railroad, was a CNA for most of my undergraduate studies and ended up spending 7 years traveling all over our beautiful homelands as a firefighter. I live a life committed to being a good ancestor for those who will come after me. What that means for me is that i dont drink, dont smoke, and i do my best to stay physically active and ready for the adventures that await in life. During my time as a firefighter i found my way out to Northern Cali where I met so many beautiful people and lands that changed my life. I started making small furniture pieces for myself and family out of reclaimed pieces of wood and often salvaged from fires. Being surrounded by those beautiful forests and people changed my life and opened me up to the world, ripe to create works that honored other Indigenous Peoples world views as well as my own. l am also really into clay and textiles. No matter the medium, i just want to be able to give you something made from my heart and i want that thing to be made with a process that carries healing and power.

A year ago my family and i as you may well know were deep in the unimaginable with my baby Billie Oak in PICU. a year ago her mom and i were praying for her life having just had two surgeries in a matter of days. my art, in particular, the clothing pieces like the 1978 American Indian Religious Freedom Sweatshirt became blankets of protection for us. I couldn't have imagined i would make something so relevant and necessary to my own health and healing and that of my baby girl as we filled her room with prayer songs and prayer ties. and not only that, those clothes became my way of staying connected to the future, staying grounded envisioning a future much simpler than the one we were in.

thank yall for being a supportive community! I will continue to create moments out of High Rez that push forward in all ways and I hope you will stick around for what’s to come!

I am hella sad I missed the epic hesapa wacipi but honestly this Detroit Powwow is doing things for me. 🫶🏽🙌🏽

Out here vending and educating one non native at a time. 🤣❤️ but seriously I’ve had an amazing time today. Listening to powwow music and chatting with people all day is medicine.

Name a more dynamic duo than a Rez Dog and it’s Aunty 🙌🏽🐕

My cousin is really giving us gems here with the 1978 sweatshirt showcasing Rez Life in a real way, which is impromptu walks in the hills and walks with sunkas and nights under the moon. I’m very honored to have my cousin and nieces sharing the photos with yall leading the way for creative direction and modeling.

1978 is a nod and prompt for those who don’t know, the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. I think this is an important doorway of education for those who have no idea that it was only 1978 that our ways of life were decriminalized. Under the Code of Indian Offenses of 1883 our ways of life were outlawed and these laws stood until 1978. I love hearing about the ways you’re all wearing it! Taking up space and starting conversations around this was my goal along with delivering garments that are high quality and ethically sourced and produced.

The context of time and how recent these changes are an important grounding for us all to build solidarity around. Another context framing is that my niece here in the photo, her grandfather, Richard Moves Camp was one of the leaders who helped make that 1978 act a reality. Within just two generations we see the work that’s happened and the work that is ongoing. This sweatshirt stands as truth that can not be hidden or buried. Wearing this sweatshirt is taking a stand for injustice as much as it is owning the power that it is to be Indigenous, in our case the power that is being Lakota💪🏽

This is just the start of a series of garments that all align with this powerful education component. I’m curious what dates in history or events you would like to see? What would be important for you and your community to see?

you’re the most incredible Parent, Ina, Mama that I’ve ever witnessed. You’re so much more than these three things and it’s not the sole source of your identity, but I have to say, you’re crushing the job, MVP.

Seeing you in all ways, I want to celebrate you and what you bring to our world. So much joy and warmth, interwoven with love and protection. It’s hard to comprehend the last year of life, hard to comprehend the depth to which I’ve grown to respect and care for you. Seeing our daughter feel so safe in your arms in such a difficult time is everything to me. Seeing how she touches your face, intently stares at your tattoos, and smiles so big for you is favorite channel.

Today and honestly every chance I get I want to celebrate you and your power both as a person and as the best possible person to bring a baby into this world with. These were all moments where I fell in love with you over and over again among thousands still encapsulating my entire phone memory. Some of them more difficult then others, some of them gone in a moment and some seem to last forever. I look at our baby now connecting to relaxation and softness. I see your eyes, I see your hair, your face, your focus, your radiance. I feel lucky that this is the reality we get to live. ❤️
