Gather around my new to DIYers...I've got something to tell you that's going to save you ALOT of time and headache. I keep seeing the questions asked over and over..."Do I need to sand"? "Do I need to prime"? YES and YES! I know we all get lazy or we are tired before we even start a project, but you can't shortcut when painting if you want it to last and have great results. You can't just grab a piece of furniture, roll or spray on primer, let it dry, then do the same with paint and think..Tada.. done. IT AINT GONNA WORK! 😉 lol Its's going to eventually peel.
Here's the rules (this goes for ANY paint, chalk included
1. PATIENCE...yep... Can't hurry paint!
2. SAND IT. Doest have to be to the bare wood unless your staining. This is a must. Just enough to rough the surface for the primer to grab. (220 grit works well). This is for laminates/composites as well.
3. PRIME IT. My favorite is Glidden's Gripper. Let it dry good. Primers and paints not only have to dry, but cure (harden).
4. PAINT IT. Know your "kind" of paint. Oil based or water based. If you choose an oil based paint, you have to use an oil based primer. Chalk paints are water based. Remember..oil and water don't mix.
5. SEAL IT. If you're a chalk paint kinda person, you can seal it with wax or polyacrylic (my preference). Latex/acrylic paint, use polyacrylic. Polyurethane is used for sealing a stained piece. Rule of thumb...If you clean your brush with soap and water, use a sealer that's the same. If you have to use mineral spirits to clean your brush after painting, use a sealer that's the same.
I know it's hard and tiring to paint in this summer heat everyone is having, but you have to prep your piece before you paint...That's the key, not so much as the pretty color of paint.
I'm trying to save you all from making mistakes, only to have you eventually say..."WTH? Why is it peeling or rubbing off? I painted that a month ago."
I hope this helps. A lot of comments and answers are here in this group. Just go to the top and search a few key words. I'm sure you'll find an answer. There's a lot of talent in this group of wonderful DIYers.
Now go have fun and turn that trash into treasure! 😆
