Look at the size of these “nails”! Although most traditional carpentry in Japan uses tight fitting joints and wedges or pegs, apparently sometimes these nails (this one is 28cm or 11” long!)were used. The second pic shows the tool used to make the hole for the nail before they drove the nail in.

Yesterday I posted about a pattern that had inlaid wood. Here’s an example of that. I always assumed it was just layers of wood but they actually put a .75 mm strip of wood, in a dado, in a strip of wood 2.5mm thick. I didn’t get to see the tools used to do this(maybe next time!).

When I was at they showed me these two new patterns they created to mimic Arabic designs . They’re incredibly intricate not only in the fact that they bends and tons of joints but they also have a shaped profile and inlaid with other wood! I have a lot of work ahead of me to get to this level! I’ll be posting more about this.

This was the strangest chisel I’ve seen! I don’t know it’s Japanese name, but it’s a offset dog leg chisel.

Yesterday I posted a Reel with pics of the this Kumiko piece made by Mr. Mastsubayashi. The pic doesn’t do the work any justice. The more you looked, the more little details you hadn’t noticed before, showed up! It was a spectacular piece and was honored to be able to see it.
