Live Edge Dining Set
Top: Hand-hewn timbers, species unknown, possibly Catalpa
Base: White Oak with live edge trestle, species unknown
Benches: White Oak base with unknown top
This dining room set was custom built for a couple who had not been able to find anything that fit into their dining space in a style that they liked. After finding out what design elements they wanted and also knowing the couple well, I had in mind the lumber I would use for the project: a stack of double salvaged, hand-hewn, well aged boards, the species of which I couldn't quite identify.
A while back I had been given some aged lumber that had been used as siding. The siding had been made from hand-hewn timbers out of an old barn from somewhere east of the Mississippi. These double salvaged timbers would become the top of the table and the seats of the benches.
The dimensions of the table and benches were very specific, in order to have the pieces look correct for the space they were being built for, it needed a design that was not heavy or bulky. Deciding to use as much open space, as structurally possible, in the base frame and table top became a crucial element to the design.
