Rejuvenating old and vintage wood furniture back to “as close to” it’s original life as possible unless it’s too mangled or just too butt ugly in which case, I’ll give it new life with a face lift.

I got started on this piece and of course forgot the before photos. However, if it seems a bit déjà vu-ish, it’s because it’s the EXACT same table as the Herod drop clover leaf end table that I did a while back. And it came in just about as many broken pieces. The table top and all leaves were put back together, glued and clamped for a few days. Then on to removing the 1970s red shine, giving it a new color then covered it in polyurethane to try and prevent future glass ring marks…being that its purpose in life is to support cold drinks.

I have officially had my butt kicked! The amount of start-overs and re-dos on this piece is off the charts. The panels of burled walnut on this cabinet did NOT want to become as dark as I was trying to make them. The stain is ebony and was chosen to try to help blend some old water stains in the veneer that were too deep to sand out. The finish is a brushed, satin lacquer. I knocked-down the sheen on the satin even more to hopefully accomplish a cross between mat and satin. I’ll let it sit for a few or more days then apply my bees wax to water proof it a little more before it leaves for home. So much trial and error…a love/hate relationship. I’ve hated it. Now I love it!

Staining done except for blending and touch up work which will be done after first coat of finish. The chosen finish coat will be a hand-rubbed satin lacquer. My all time fav.

Old, gutted Capehart Cabinet. Lots of water damage to the walnut veneer from years of potted plants sitting on it. The pots left their footprint behind. Which of course need to be removed from the thin veneer. Hmm…okay 🤔. Welll, some veneer had to be replaced. The cabinet doors are burled walnut. The center piece door was believed to be a decorative decal only to find it was Mokuzogan - Japanese wood inlay art. Currently it has been hand scrapped, sanded, glued, veneer repaired and currently awaiting its new outer wear. Can’t wait to see what she looks like with new clothes. My most labor intensive project to date.

Trying to get back in the swing of things. But moving forward without the shop foreman, Ali, makes hard it to get things done. The boys do like having their own sleeping spots and Banger has claimed her throne. Doing our best.

New building, new Christmas lights. Just spent the day up and down the ladder. It was worth it. Nothing says Christmas like 77 degree sunny weather.

Well…I’m calling it done. We’ll see if all involved believe that so or not. The table top and leaves are different lumber and regardless of the multiple coats of stain put on the leaves the grain of the leaves just didn’t soak up the stain like the tabletop did. I now believe the top is walnut. Burled walnut on the tabletop with large thursty pores but not the leaves. I tinted the best I can with stain then moved on to finish and wax. I love it. But the perfectionist in me wants the grains to match. It is a very nice, probably from the 40s, solid wood table from different woods, all hard woods. Nothing cheap on the little gem!

The new shop helper, Banger, found the pet door. Needless to say he’s too distracted to help much!
