Looking for a local garden or green space in need of a major overhaul, overgrown, vines, junk, hasn't been maintained in a long time, looking to do a dramatic before and after! Collingwood, Oaklyn, Audubon, Haddon Heights, area. These are sample pictures, but I have done similar work in backyards and empty lots cleaning them up and adding new plantings and mulch. Have you heard of Tiny Forests or Sugi Project?

Very densely planted native tree, shrub, perennial forests in deep amended soils being planted around the world, at schools, parks, shorelines, colleges, street sides, easy to incorporate into an existing site or as part of a design, they soak up rainwater, grow very quickly, develop ecosystems, provide a connection to nature and are great citizen science projects. We need more in the U.S. especially in the North East and Mid-Atlantic. They have a long history in Japan and have only recently been started in the U.S.

Seed Swap at Whitesbog Preservation Trust this coming Saturday March 30 will also include a Tea & Terrarium event! Stop in anytime between 10 am - 2 pm to swap some seeds, share cuttings, or make and take a terrarium of your choice ($10-$35 depending on the size) and enjoy some tea or coffee! In the Barrel Factory at Whitesbog Historic Village in Browns Mills, NJ. Feel free to check out the General Store and the Cottages and Cranberry & Blueberry Museum, walk some trails, while you are visiting!

I think these first two pictures are bronze fennel regrowing from last year. The daffodils are in the Elizabeth White Gardens by the trails.

The Garden Chronicles on Magnolia Network Discovery + has features on local gardens including Morris Arboretum & Gardens of the University of Pennsylvania and Chanticleer Garden which are a wonderful look behind the scenes at the work of the teams that maintain these beautiful gardens and provide a history and overview of the uniqueness of each and their ethos. Morris Arboretum's Fernery is the only one in the Western Hemisphere! Beautiful place to visit in the winter. Morris is in Chestnut Hill area of Philadelphia. Chanticleer is a stunning garden to visit during the open season, the staff design new plantings in the multiple zones/spaces like the Ruins Garden. Chanticleer is in Wayne, PA, closed for the winter.
Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library and Andalusia are also featured in season 1 (8 episodes)

The show features Gardens around the U.S., each with their own interesting collections of plants and design.

For more local gardens I recommend the book on Gardens of the Philadelphia Area.

The Philadelphia Zoo has done a wonderful job adding native plants and pollinator friendly plantings all over! They are easiest to see in their current dinosaur exhibit, but they were blooming throughout the Zoo!

Wow check out the Pollinator Garden!

Before, During and After!

Planted a new Pollinator Garden at the Preschool in Pemberton with help from their Proud Parents program! This lovely outdoor classroom now has a variety of native plants from Wild Roots NJ and BTB State Forest, as well as seeds collected from my garden and Botanical Interests pollinator seed packets.

Over time we will add plantings as well as a shrub or two as the students learn about seeds, acorns, flowers, butterflies, bees and more. Whitesbog's PINES program will continue to lead education activities in the garden each season including promoting literacy with children's books on pollinators, plants and nature.

Now is a great time to plant some shrubs or a tree in your landscape! Cooler temperatures allow the plants time to adjust with less stress. And most nurseries have them on sale! (50% off at Magnolia Gardens in NJ)

Try a Juneberry (shadbush), oakleaf hydrangea, dogwood, inkberry, viburnum, blueberry, sweetbay magnolia, or another local native plant with multi-season interest and benefits to wildlife!

Pictured here is one of my blueberry plants this fall.
