Very helpful advice from our Extension office! Seed orders are sorted, packed and almost ready for delivery!
It may still be cold outside, but it’s easy to get your seeds started indoors! Follow these simple instructions written by one of our own Master Gardener Volunteers, to get your plants going:
1. Gather your supplies – seeds, seed-starting medium (not garden soil); clean containers with drainage holes in the bottom; labels; grow lights or a big, bright window; and a heat mat – optional
2. Read seed packet guidelines or reference your seed catalog for when to start your seeds, how deep to sow them, and how many days to germination.
3. Fill your clean containers with pre-moistened seed starting medium or “pods” or kits available at big box stores.
4. Cover with plastic wrap or a clear glass dome and place the containers on a heat mat (if using).
5. Uncover when seedlings begin to appear and remove the heat mat.
6. Provide 14 – 16 hours of light per day, preferably 2-3 inches above the seedlings if you are using grow lights.
7. Keep the soil moist and add ½ strength balanced fertilizer after the second set of leaves appear if your starting medium did not already contain it.
8. Transplant your seedlings into your garden after the last frost date in your area.
Problems you may encounter: Too little or uneven light, too much or too little water, and too hot or too cold. Don’t be afraid to try - learn as you go!
