The Tour de France just finished and Olympic cycling events start this Saturday. It is a great time to be a cycling fan.

This is a girls Schwinn Stingray Fair Lady. It was manufactured in Chicago in April 1976 in the bicentennial colorway. It was in a garage for many years and I brought it back to life by re-upholstering the original banana seat, cleaned and re-built the coaster brake, removed the rust, replaced tires and tubes and added streamers for full effect. My wife wanted this bike in 1976 and now cruises to the pool in retro style.

If you have a a bike you have not been using, I can bring it back so you can get out and ride.

I had the good fortune today to work on the Schwinn Continental on the left (circa 1974). Th advertisement is on the right. This is the OG "ten speed" along with the Schwinn Varsity. The Continental was manufactured in Chicago from 1946 to 1982. The Continental and Varsity were Schwinn's top models in the 1960s and 1970's. These bikes were the first bikes to offer auxiliary brake levers to allow for more upright riding (those handles on the flat bar that push down the brakes handles when squeezed).

The Continental weighs in at a robust 35 pounds and I love the solid feel of the bike and still whisper quiet after 45 years.

Regrettably, the original Schwinn declared bankruptcy in 1992 with the last Schwinn made in America in 1982. Schwinn is now a sub brand of Pacific Cycle with all bikes made overseas.

If you have an original Schwinn, hold on to it. I would love to get it rolling again. I have space in my schedule later in the week for repairs. I roll to you. JZ
