Apple blossoms and baby pears - so far, they are surviving the nightly frosts 🥶

The grape vines are coming in nicely 💚 I use the leaves in my pottery and that’s about it 😝

Milkweed is on its way out of the ground! It is one of the last native plants (in my beds, at least) to pop up 💚

A quick walk around the yard today yielded lots of signs of spring! This is my Kanakakee Mallow - all three plants from last year made it through the winter and are just about to burst out of the ground 💚

The potential 💚

I usually find such comfort in the outdoors, but lately it has felt too much like I’m trying to escape the hatred and anger simmering here in the US. Today, I planted beans & tomatoes, squash and everlasting spinach, and finally walked out to the apple orchard to thin. I had more to do - peppers, basil, some luffa that all need to go in the ground, but instead I came inside & just sat for a bit. Sending love and comfort to all the people affected by gun violence 💚 we are broken, and it’s all so awful.

First monarch of the season - she fluttered over as I was dunking my next batch of seedlings to transplant & landed on a swamp milkweed 💚
She was too fluttery for me to photograph, but look at what she left behind!
I grew these milkweed from seed last year as part of my native garden. I started a big bed in front of the house and filled it with a mix of annuals (for immediate color) and perennials. I was so excited when these swamp milkweed plants bloomed last summer! And the monarch loved them - nearly all the leaves were eaten off by the end of July! I wasn’t sure first year plants could handle that, but here they are, growing beautifully and ready to act as hosts for our garden’s visitors!

Hope your day is what you hoped for - whatever kind of mother you are/have/need/etc.
I don’t love these made up holidays - so many seem to be rooted in getting more stuff instead of really making connections and building relationships 💚
Good thing I have fancy tulips from to keep me company in my deep thoughts 😬

If you watched my last reel, the final plants I talked about were my bay laurel cuttings 🌱
I am really hoping they take … but even if they don’t, trimming the mama tree induced all this lovely new growth!
