So if you buy something with palm oil or with one of the many palm oil derivatives, it likely comes from that region. Orangutans only live in the jungles of Sumatra and Borneo. Across their entire range, conversion of

highly productive peat bottom rainforest to oil palm plantations is occurring on a massive scale. Logging continues even within protected areas and road building threatens to fragment the habitat of the last viable populations. These factors are responsible for the loss of over 80% of orangutan's habitat over the last 20 years. It is estimated that there could be as few as 40,000 orangutans left in the wild. We share 97% of our DNA with these primates, and they resemble us in facial expression, gesture, and many other ways.

I'm so sorry to say that I took my kids to the West Coast Game Park outside of Bandon OR. They were super tired of being in the car and it was there, a petting zoo, so we went for it. Oh, it was horrible, I don't usually complain on FB, but the chimpanzee were FREAKING OUT. They were grabbing the wire fencing and shaking it and then banging on the person gate. It was horrible. Once you realize they are just like you, they are you, it doesn't go away, and it's really sad. In fact it's even more humiliating because they are supposed to be in the trees, in the wild, your kids know it and so do you.

Why use palm oil in soap when we have plenty of awesome oils perfect for soapmaking right here in the Pacific Northwest? Over 90% of the palm oil coming into this country is from Malaysia or Indonesia. Get it? If your label says some type of palm oil, then it is coming from there and that is awfully far away, not to mention killing the planet. Oh, good ole Utah Phillips quote just popped in my head, "The earth is not dying, it is being killed by people with names and addresses."
