Did you ever go outside at dusk and catch lightening bugs?
Mama came from a family of 11 brothers and sisters. My grandparents house topped the list of favorite places to be. 30 first cousins, all the Aunts and Uncles, and Mamaw and Papaw were my closest people.
Seems like summer time was always full of weekends in North Cove, 4Wheelers in the fields, riding some pigs or chasing the family donkey. We swam in the creek, the same one that washed my Uncle's house away in the flood. It was a creek. Not a river. A little, small creek. One cousin always stood on the bank as the snake patrol. He'd shoot snakes off the banks and we would just duck. He had us convinced they would swallow us whole. He was our oldest and best cousin, so we believed every word he said.
I think I remember somebody died, and we came from the funeral and had to chase to donkey all the way up the road in our dresses. Mamaw and Papaw had a tiny 2 bedroom house, and about 75 of us would cram right in there like nothing.
We played in the attic. Skinned racc**ns. Played with the hunting dogs. Picked beans on the porch. Shucked corn by the bushel. Ate peaches and plums off the trees. We had pet turtles, rabbits, chickens, and stray animals of every kind. Mamaw had birds in the kitchen, on top of the dryer. She sung to them while she cooked dinner.
Papaw had a c**n dog that got accidentally tied to Uncle Lee's truck, and he drove it all the way to town. He drove slow, because it is curvy there, but the dog lost all his skin on the way. Mamaw put that dog on a lace pillow she made and carried him everywhere she went until his fur grew back. It was awful. She loved him right back to health though. He was always ugly after that, but he was well loved and cared for.
Every single night, our main event was to catch lightening bugs. We would gather up canning jars, jab holes in the lids, and catch as many as we could. Then, we'd turn all the lights off in the house and watch them glow. Cousin Steve would release them after a little while, so we could catch them again the next night.โค๏ธ
Lightening bug catching was a very big deal. Our was a scheduled event, almost every single night.
In fact, my entire childhood seemed to center around it.
I realized tonight as I was watching the lightening bugs outside, that I have never given my grandboys an amazing summer like that. Starting tomorrow, we are going to change our lives.
Lightening bugs are going to transform our summer. Our grandparenting. Our time together.
We need more lightening bug catching in this world.
