Great day in Kennebunk for our annual Brickstore Museum Classic against the Mudville Base Ball Club. The boys from Holliston brought their A+ game today and rolled the home team 16-8 in front of a loud and proud hometown crowd! We’ll have a chance to even the season series next weekend as we travel to Holliston to play Mudville for the Holliston 300th Anniversary Celebration. Hurrah!

When we organize games against town teams, we never know what to expect. This game was a little different because it was set up through Fred Newcomb who is the father of our team president. We played against a team of locals in honor of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Town of Burnham, Maine. We were told the local nine would play us tough, but we didn’t think much of it until we saw them take batting practice. They were a strong group of athletes and not only did they play well, they took to the rules of 1864 very quickly. They jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead after one inning, and we fought back and took a 5-4 lead a few innings later. Both teams fought hard and played great defense, and Dirigo would prevail 13-7 in the end, but the men from Burnham gave us quite the scare today. We look forward to a rematch in the future!

Today, we are thinking about our brothers in Massachusetts as they mourn the passing of a true legend of the game. I will remember Graybeard for three things: calling a great game, dressing the part better than anyone else before or since, and his unique passion for Diet Moxie. You'll be missed, Mr. Peart.
