Amanda Cogswell Kirk:
When my father designed this house in 1968, it was a modern showpiece, the first home in North Carolina with a courtyard pool and received special recognition from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). After my mother had lived in it for 40 years, it was filled not only with huge canvases of original art by North Carolina painters of note, mid-century furniture and antique Persian rugs — it was also stuffed with junk she wouldn’t throw away. Including two suitcases entirely filled with little hotel soaps. When we moved my mother to Burlington to live with me, I divvied up art and silver and keepsakes with my sister, sold the valuable stuff neither of us wanted and then had a giant dumpster delivered to the driveway. My mother has a habit of hiding jewelry and cash in odd places, so it was important that I go through everything carefully, including every single folder in a wall of four-drawer file cabinets. Over the course of a few weeks, and with some help, I emptied this house of every single thing. Then we made a few important repairs and had the place painted before putting it on the market. It was purchased by a local couple with an awesome art collection and the wherewithal to renovate and restore this architectural icon.
