One of my “best friends”, Matt Warnick, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at American Rheinmetall was at the AUSA (Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting & Exposition) as a proud sponsor; and happened to come across my former battalion commander, retired Lieutenant Colonel Scott Rutter. LTC Rutter was there at his signing event featuring his newly released book called “Damn Fine Soldiers”, The Epic Story of Task Force 2-7 Infantry.
Matt happened to come by LTC Rutter’s booth and noticed it and bought one for me, where LTC Rutter signed the copy and personalized it.
I did not fight with Task Force 2-7 Infantry, as my company was sliced away from them to Task Force 3-69 Armor, but I know the history of their combat operations during the initial ground invasion of Iraq, all too well. Task Force 2-7 fought in someone of most difficult and bloodiest combat engagements through triumph. LTC Rutter’s unwavering leadership was critical for Task Force 2-7 and the 3rd Infantry Division’s success on the battlefield, that eventually contributed to the fall of Saddam Hussein and his regime.
Sir, I now have two copies of your book, and this one is permanently going straight on my bookshelf!! Thank you so much for the kind words, and hopefully one day our paths cross again!! Perhaps at the brigade reunion in 2028.
I could not highly recommend this book enough, as it captures the essence of combat and the difficult leadership required to lead a task force during heavy combat operations. The success of Task Force 2-7 was incredible and should be a reminder of the vast changes in modern warfare!!
