There are some great events coming up in West Granville this year. Of special interest is that the Civil War drum once owned by Charles Watson Roberts will be on display during the June 27 concert.

On this day 374 years ago, John Bean (MacBean) arrived in Massachusetts. The ship Sarah and John docked in Boston February 24, 1652. John is the ancestor of Nancy Hoyt Bean Roberts.
John had been captured after fighting Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester and was among 272 prisoners sent to the colonies. He was sold as an indentured servant to Nicholas Lissen and married Lissen’s daughter on April 18, 1654 in
Exeter New Hampshire.

Revolutionary Research- January 30, 2026

Over the course of the year, we aim to share short posts on our social media and website to get you thinking about your family history during the anniversary of the Revolution.

The library subscribes to both Ancestry Library Edition and Fold3 (military records). If you’re curious to see whether you had an ancestor involved in the Revolution or want to learn more about an ancestor, these are great places to start!

If you’re starting from the beginning, the best way to go about tracing your family tree is to start with your parents, work back to your grandparents, and so on. Take some time to think about what you already know- names, dates, locations, family stories. Talk to your relatives and collect information from them. You’ll want to verify information, of course, but you never know what will come in handy!

As you work your way back, pay attention to dates. If you had an ancestor alive during times of war or revolution, there’s a chance they may have served and military records were created that can give you more insight into their lives.

Take, for example, Ham Loomis (and we’re not only featuring him because we love his name) 1758-1827. A search in Ancestry brings back plenty of information about Ham- from census records and vital records, you can get a pretty good picture of his life. Included in the search results is Ham’s record in the U.S. Revolutionary War’s Burial Index.

From here, you could specifically look up Captain Kellogg’s regiment and the march to Horse Neck.

About the Blandford Fair Grounds:

Home to the Union Agricultural & Horticulture Society founded in 1867, the fair grounds host the annual Blandford Fair each Labor Day Weekend. The site has served as an important meeting spot for neighboring towns for the last 158 years. Reunion activities on August 10 will take place in the dining hall as well as throughout the nearby outdoor space and pavilions. The Blandford Fair Preservation Association is actively raising money and renovating the facilities and we are pleased to help support this work by hosting the Reunion there.
