one of the latest items for sale, a segmented turning version of a dice tray and tumbler. Made with a blonde wood from Brazil which I can't even identify but is very hard and with a middle band on each of a thin strip of walnut and cherry and birch segments. The felt is a high quality pool table material.
Tray measures 7 1/4" in diameter and the tumbler is 3" tall, 2 1/2" in diameter.

Here's something you don't see every day, a salesman's sample of a chest of drawers! A long time client brought it in to have a few pieces of trim reapplied and said that he keeps it on top of a chest that looks just like this one. Walnut, from about late 1800s with working drawers.

Here is an unusual table which had been in a fire and needed some help. It is a ship's table and is designed for the top to stay level even with the rocking of the ship, and pretty impressively built. The before shots are lacking the big lead weight which is attached in the after shots. This part did not need help from me so didn't make the trip to the shop.
The top spins in order to use the fold up leaves.

I saw a posting today about a Beverly man making tables from pallet wood and actually starting a business from it. Good for him! I like recycling and have been doing it with recovered wood since at least 1975. It brought to mind something I made back in 1999 from wood from very large pallets or shipping crates from a glass company. This is shown with yours truly, Gary Thomas, (and Sneakers the cat) at my future wife's place. This piece was donated to the American Diner Museum and raffled as a fund raiser within a year.
After this was raffled I decided to make another as we got kind of attached to it, and the kids liked doing their homework on it. So I made another but from quarter sawn white oak, with a tennessee pink marble top. This was much truer to the original which was made by the Worcester Lunch Car Co. for their diners and the inspiration for this piece. It is quite popular at parties at our house.

An old favorite, of which I have probably made 70 or more! A child's step stool/chair. These are usually produced from short lengths of wood leftover from larger projects or parts from other furniture recycled from throwaway furniture, i.e. old bedrails, furniture tops, table leaves etc.. I hate to see good hardwood go to waste.
A pattern which I borrowed from a very old example I purchased at a yard sale many years ago. also displayed is stock before and after being prepared to become these same items. These step stools are made from maple, oak, chestnut, hard pine, or sometimes mixed.
A great baby shower or Christmas gift.

Here is a piece I built about 1999 for my wife. She was looking for someplace to display her Limoge box collection but we didn't have anywhere to put a display case. She was also in need of a bookcase. So I thought, why not incorporate a display case on top of a bookcase? here is the result in oak, with a recycled door from a barrister bookcase. I can't remember seeing anything else quite like since.
It was actually fun to see my late father-in-law inspecting this piece, determined to find something wrong with it. He finally had to give up and admit I had done a good job!

here is a job done a while back for a client and this has to be one of the most elaborate ice boxes I have ever seen. A lot of work to strip and refinish this guy! Most ice boxes tend to be a bit more of the plain, utilitarian variety but this was made for show! I'm glad I took a photo of this one.

Here is project from way back in the 1980s, a wooden version of the old favorite board game, parcheesi. Flip it over and you have a chess/checkerboard. These two boards are made from walnut, mahogany, oak, cherry, birch, fir, poplar, and ash. There are a number of these boards out there, in the wild. Actually inspired by my grandfather's (Gordon T. Whitaker) wooden chess boards he produced in the 1950s.

Here is an example of a very neglected oak arts and crafts style desk. The lid is unattached and its hardware needs work. The bottom drawer slot is a bit of a mess too and the entire case needed gluing as well as a refinish. The second image shows this uniquely styled piece in proper form, functioning as intended!
