This year has been one of the most bittersweet years I can remember.

Watching Theo grow and welcoming Micah into our family has brought us so much joy. At the same time, losing Jules was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through. Between the highs and the lows, this year has had a big impact on us personally—and on Peterson’s Custom Woodworking.

But we’ve kept building, growing, and moving forward.

Theo has officially stepped in as our newest project manager 😂 He’s reviewing everything we currently have in the shop and deciding which projects we should show you first. We have some pretty cool builds coming!

I also finally took a little time to build something for our own home. Check out the top for my new desk! It’s made from sassafras—the same type of tree traditionally associated with root b**r. Sometimes it’s nice to build something for yourself and remember why you fell in love with the craft in the first place.

And we’re growing in another way too! We’re adding a new trailer to the business that will give us a much better mobile workspace and allow us to take on more work on-site.

It’s been a year of growth, loss, family, and a whole lot of sawdust.

I turned this w**e bottle stopper from a piece of tigerwood, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The rich golden color paired with the natural dark streaks gives every piece its own unique character—no two are ever the same.

One of my favorite things about woodturning is taking a small blank and transforming it into something that’s both beautiful and functional. It’s a simple project, but it’s something that can be used and appreciated for years to come.

It’s projects like these that remind me why I love being in the shop.

We hired our first part-time employee today. So far, his priorities have been:

1. Playing with the fan.
2. Staring at random objects.
3. Smiling at everyone.
4. Working… absolutely not.

It’s only Monday, so we’re hoping the work ethic improves by Friday. 😂

Not every project leaves the shop.

I turned this walnut ring holder for my wife, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite things I’ve made. There’s something special about creating a gift by hand for someone you love.

It’s a reminder that woodworking isn’t just about building things—it’s about making memories.

We finally fired up the new lathe yesterday… and Theo’s first baseball bat was born! ⚾️

He’s getting called up to Milwaukee tonight, so hopefully he can help the Cubs put some runs on the board. 😂

I had an absolute blast making this. There’s just something special about taking a rough piece of walnut and turning it into something like this. Safe to say the lathe is going to be seeing a lot of use around here!

Happy Friday, everyone!

Theo’s busy “driving” the SawStop today while I try to get some actual work done. 😂 I think he’s convinced the fence wheel is a steering wheel.

I’ve been kicking around the idea of making more shop videos, but being in front of the camera is way outside my comfort zone. I’m gonna give it a shot anyway!

What would you all actually want to see? Builds, tool reviews, shop tips, behind-the-scenes chaos… or just Theo running quality control? 😂
