I don’t usually post these kinds of things, but the Japanese are incredible craftsmen and blacksmiths and this video really shows how woodworking, and the appreciation of building things with your own two hands, is truly a universal language. Hope you enjoy (and feel free to FF through some of the slower parts).

When my son moved to Japan he only knew a few words of Japanese. Within his first couple of days he met a man who became his friend. Although they could bare...

Next batch of knives fresh in from Japan! One of the fringe benefits is reading the Japanese newspapers used for packaging material. Fun fact: I took Japanese for 9 years - I remember some of it, but don’t ask me to translate anything. That said, the two larger knives are the same as the last knife I did and the smaller one, as you can see, is simply a smaller version. Haven’t decided which one(s) I’m keeping or selling, but stay tuned.

Another fun project in the books. A Japanese chefs knife (shipped all the way from Japan) with a custom wood handle. This was a 5 year anniversary gift for a very lucky guy (Sean Fullmer) (5 year theme = wood). The handle is made from figured Sapele (a cousin of mahogany), Wenge, and Curly Maple. Tell me what you guys think in the comments. Would you like to see more of these and/or purchase one for yourselves?

My machete needed a new handle so I figured I might as well do it myself. First handle I’ve ever put on a blade...now I need to find more knives that need handles because this was a lot of fun.

Better shot of my next project. This is going to be the top of a small bench that will double as a shoe holder. European cherry with purple heart stripes (yes, the wood really is purple). Stay tuned...

Nothing beats seeing the final installation of a project. Chestnut bar top made from reclaimed boards from the property’s own farm house.
