Someone grab me a bib.
Austin food truck culture IS Austin culture. It’s hot. It’s sticky. It’s a little weird. A little off-center. Distinctly adventurous. Rough around the edges. Unpretentious. Bold. Memorable. Visual. Unapologetic. Probably a little unhealthy. Ok, more than a little. (Where’s that bib!?) And growing so fast that it’s bursting at the seams. Literally. I’m no statistician, but I find it suspect that my ever-expanding commute times correlate directly with the number of new trucks popping up each week. Coincidence?
Umm… Excuse me, are those, um Totchos? Oh, hatch chili Totchos???
Austin is home to scores of food trucks serving up the stickiest and (arguably) most delicious bites in all the United States. (My God, Snickerdoodle Cupcakes!?) Second only to Los Angeles, Austin boasts 1,000+ food trucks in less than 300 square miles. And with 150+ people moving to ATX each day, the demand for more interesting, more daring, more cross-pollinated cuisine continues to bloom, much like my waistline. (Ummmmm… about that bib?) The Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Food Truck Nation Studyreleased last year accounted for 1,000 permits issued to ATX Food Trucks last year. So, it’s safe to say that after 12 years since Hey Cupcake! opened–officially launching the ATX food truck scene–there’s no signs that the food truck culture craze will be rolling off to greener pastures any time in the near future.
