Solid & Void

Solid & Void Architecture. Furniture. Concrete. There are natural forces at work that dictate how things will look. There should always be an integrity of material.

The tree leans because of its proximity to sun, birds fly south and the water flows. Whatever that natural force is that told the river to flow a certain way through the woods, also told the beaver to build the dam to impede that river. When a beaver builds a dam, the beaver isn’t in conflict with his environment, he is part of it. There should always be a harmonious undercurrent in a design that

responds to, interacts and informs the environment it finds itself in. Be that an apartment in Hong Kong, a countryside home or the moon. To design as unapologetically as the beaver, is to create a product that is so fitting with where it is placed, that the setting would appear incomplete without it. No matter how advanced our building technology becomes, it will always boil down to what is being built, and what it is built from. The materials are the language in which the message is spoken. The content of the message is up to the artist to decide, but the language of the message must be clear and honest. Concrete wants to be concrete. Birch can never be maple and the 110 year old cast iron pipe wants to look like it is exactly that. If you don’t want to say “110 year old cast iron pipe” then by all means remove it, but don’t paint it mauve because it goes better with the curtains. Let it be what it wants to be. Design should speak to us without requiring copious analysis. The experience can be augmented by studying it further, but additional investigation should never be demanded. When a Ferrari is spotted driving down the street, the innate reaction is: "awesome”. There needs to always be a factor of awe in any project, without sacrificing substance. It is shortsighted to deny the strength of having a motif that is so strong, it will stop you in your tracks and turn your head. So make it cool.

Update of how we’re looking from the outside at least. It’s easy to inadvertently focus on the concrete components of the design (for me at least, since I happen to be physically building that part), but the house overall is also continuing to shape into good work.
is doing an excellent job with GC’ing almost all of the components of putting this together and it has been a pleasure to work with them.

You can see from the sky how each bedroom has their own balcony, each with a unique view. Now that the main roof is watertight and the drains installed, we can install the solar panels that will cover the white TPO.

After pulling off (nearly) all of the individual panels on each of these 4 piers in the center of the house, this video shows some of the work that went into carefully removing these so as not to damage to finished piece.

This job was completed for some returning customers, who own a Cross Fit Gym. The customers needed an office space as well as a means of directing the patrons to the exercise area.

All in all, it came out great.

Very pleased with the outcome of this all white concrete table. "Strength through form" was the motif, a concept borrowed from yoga. Even at its perimeter where the concrete is very thin, it remains quite strong and balanced.

Solid & Void is being recognized with an international award this June for the Stasis Table design. The A' Design Awards is already the worlds the largest design competition, but to add to that honor, design-milk has singled out the the table as one of their favorites from that competition in this recently posted article.

There will be a ceremony to receive the award and enter it into the museum exhibition in Como, Italy this June. The table will be part of this international exhibition as it makes the rounds through several continents.

A big honor! We're pleased.

This was a good example of using straight aggregate based concrete as opposed to GFRC. 95% of the work was carpentry, as those forms were tough to get just right.

Although the gallery itself has some work to go before its completed, our role in it is done. We snapped a few of these yesterday and are very pleased with how the concrete and wood related to eachother.

Were look forward to seeing the completed building and how our work fit in the larger context.
