Winter is the perfect time for trimming trees and decorative bushes because such plants heal faster, before they start to send out their buds, and leaf out. Also, at this time of year, there's no active insects, so no threats drawn by the cuts & sap the way insects can smell that in a warmer months. Oaks are especially important to make corrective cuts now, in the cold months.

As you enjoy the video, please consider the following questions:

Do your trees have dead limbs, ice or storm damaged branches, or even branches that are rubbing, thus causing unnecessary and dangerous wear on the trunk and bark?

This situation can lead to unwanted insects, penetrating the bark of the oak and causing damage to the trees.

Either way, call Joe at 1(517)414-2318 for quality care and attention to detail.

Consider these pairings if you're planning to layout a garden.

Some vegetables defend themselves when grown in the right company.
These 9 pairings create natural pest barriers without a single spray.

- Tomatoes & Basil: Basil's methyl eugenol repels thrips and whiteflies from tomato foliage within a 2-foot radius
- Tomatoes & Marigolds: French marigold roots release alpha-terthienyl, killing root-knot nematodes in the surrounding soil
- Peppers & Nasturtiums: Nasturtiums act as a trap crop — aphids attack them first, sparing pepper plants entirely
- Carrots & Rosemary: Rosemary's volatile oils mask carrot scent from carrot rust flies during their May egg-laying window
- Cabbage & Dill: Dill flowers attract parasitic wasps that lay eggs inside cabbageworm caterpillars
- Squash & Radishes: Radishes planted around squash hills lure flea beetles away from squash seedlings
- Beans & Savory: Summer savory repels bean beetles while enhancing bean flavor through root proximity
- Eggplant & Catnip: Catnip releases nepetalactone, a compound 10 times more effective than DEET against flea beetles
- Cucumbers & Tansy: Tansy attracts ladybugs that consume cucumber beetles at a rate of 50 per day

Plant allies, not chemicals.

In late summer, monarch butterflies pass through neighborhoods looking for one thing: a place to refuel before continuing south.

By then, most lawns and borders have already finished blooming. From above, large patches of green offer nowhere to land, so butterflies keep flying.

Plants that flower later in the season quietly become stopovers. When they find one, they stay, feed, and move on with enough energy to continue the journey.

February is when that future is decided.

What blooms in August depends on what gets planted in early spring. A yard doesn’t have to be large to matter — it only needs one place that still offers nectar when everything else fades.

**Snowstorm Shifts North, Major Impact Possible**

The weekend storm system continues to trend north, and the risk for a significant snowfall is increasing locally and around the region. It is too early to know how much snow will fall at this time. A lot of that will come down to the exact storm track, and this system may continue to drift north or retreat back to the south over the next couple of days. With that said, it is clear that this storm has the potential to produce significant snowfall. The new data in this morning shows the chance for 5" or more of snow is about 40% northwest of Toledo and 60% southeast. It is very likely that southern and eastern Ohio will pick up on 5" or more of snow with 80%+ odds.

Snow is expected to start by Saturday evening and end as light snow by Monday morning. Snow is likely all day Sunday. The cold is going to make this storm worse for 2 reasons. 1) It will make it very tough for salt, brine, etc to work on the roads. 2) It will help create a very fluffy snow that can blow and drift easier. Normally an inch of moisture produces about 10" of snow when a storm system is coming out of the south. Because the arctic air will be locked into place, it will create a very fluffy snowfall. That snow ratio could be as high as 25 to 1 in northwest Ohio. That means that 1 inch of moisture would give us 25" of snow. Now, we will NOT get 1" of moisture here at home. However, the cold air will mean that this storm will be more efficient at producing higher snow totals than normal. It is looking breezy late Sunday and Monday, but high winds are not expected at this point. With that said, the winds will be high enough with the light/fluffy snow to cause blowing and drifting. Stay tunned, we will have more information as we get it. I wanted everyone to have that heads up of what we are seeing, especially if you have travel plans on Sunday into early Monday.

Stay safe, this holiday season and all winter long. While our snow routes are completely full as we filled our last open slot in early November's final contract, we wish you the very best.
Please keep MPL in mind if you are looking for winter tree trimming, as it's actually the very best time to trim most trees, since the sap is not running, and the tree's energy is being sent to the roots.

❄️💔 Snow Shoveling Safety Reminder from Cambridge Township Fire Department

Shoveling snow can be more dangerous than it looks — especially for those with heart conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a sedentary lifestyle. Cold air and sudden exertion can put serious strain on your heart.

Know the warning signs of a heart attack:

• Chest pain or pressure
• Shortness of breath
• Pain in the neck, jaw, or arms
• Lightheadedness or cold sweat

If you feel any of these symptoms while shoveling, stop immediately and call 911.

After 5 1/2 wonderful years of reliable work, the Stihl Magnum 800 backpack blower finally went. It's something that can't be repaired. Fortunately In Ann Arbor had the new 9010 that I've been interested in adding to my arsenal. It's supposed to be the most powerful backpack blower produced. Looking forward to putting that to good use as we continue our fall cleanups next week starting Monday...
