New Project Launch!
We completed a community climbing center on a main street in
central Shanghai. It’s designed as more than a place to climb—music and drinks are part of the experience, creating a simple mix of “climb, listen, and sip.”
Located in Changning District, BLOC keeps a neighborhood feel by setting the facade back within the existing building line. This creates a small recessed corner with a transparent folding window, making the sidewalk feel wider and giving both climbers and passersby a calmer buffer space. A continuous glass frontage brings in even daylight and keeps the interior connected to the street—light, weather, and
everyday city scenes stay present while you climb.
The facade is set back within the original building line to form a recessed corner with a transparent folding window. This widens the sidewalk and creates a calm buffer shared by athletes and neighbors, keeping the space visually and atmospherically connected to the street.
Inside, the main structure is built with scaffolding, using modular, removable frames that can adapt to different group activities. Exposed pipes and structural elements add an industrial character. For finishes, reclaimed offcut timber was collected and assembled to preserve its irregular texture and history. Reusing and refinishing these natural materials reduced construction waste and carbon impact, reflecting climbing’s respect for nature and encouraging a stronger connection to the outdoors.
BLOC also works as a cultural stop for locals and visitors—whether you drop in to climb or add it to your route, it offers a direct read on Shanghai’s climbing scene, paired with music and a relaxed social atmosphere.
